NYU Langone Health announced it will permanently discontinue its transgender treatment program for minors, citing leadership changes and a challenging regulatory climate following federal funding threats from the Trump administration.
In a statement Wednesday, a spokesperson for the major Manhattan hospital said the decision was made after the departure of the program’s medical director and amid the “current regulatory environment.”
“Given the recent departure of our medical director, coupled with the current regulatory environment, we made the difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program,” the spokesperson said. “We are committed to helping patients in our care manage this change. This does not impact our pediatric mental health care programs, which will continue.”
The hospital’s website now refers to its services under the broader title “Gender & Sexuality Service,” rather than the previous “Transgender Youth Health Program.”
Federal Funding Pressure
The decision comes after warnings from President Donald Trump that his administration could withdraw federal funding from medical institutions providing transgender treatments to minors. Several hospitals nationwide have reportedly paused or reevaluated such services in response to the potential loss of Medicaid and Medicare dollars.
NYU Langone was among a number of high-profile institutions that had previously scaled back youth gender-related services because of funding uncertainty.
The issue has taken center stage in national politics, with supporters of transgender youth services arguing it is medically necessary and supported by major medical associations, while opponents point to scandals alleging that leading medical associations sacrificed scientific truth for lucrative procedures and political motivations.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani had previously pledged to allocate $65 million in taxpayer funding to public providers that support transgender New Yorkers, including minors.
Similar Moves in Massachusetts
Other hospitals have taken similar steps. Baystate Health, the largest healthcare provider in western Massachusetts, recently announced it would stop prescribing transgender hormone treatments to patients under 18.
In a statement to The Boston Globe, a Baystate spokesperson said the decision reflected the “evolving regulatory landscape” and concerns over preserving access to hundreds of millions of dollars in Medicaid and Medicare funding.
“Nearly 70% of Baystate Health patients rely on Medicaid and Medicare, and preserving access to care for these individuals and all others in our community is a responsibility we take seriously,” the spokesperson said.
Baystate indicated it would continue offering counseling services and refer underage patients to other local facilities for prescriptions.
Ongoing National Debate
The scaling back of transgender youth services at major institutions underscores the broader national debate over medical treatments for transgender minors. With federal funding, state policy, and local politics increasingly intertwined, hospitals face mounting pressure as they navigate medical guidance, legal risk, and financial stability.
For affected families, the changes mean seeking alternative providers or adjusting treatment plans as the Trump administration flexes its muscle.

Seijah
I’am located In S.E. Alaska, In recent years the private medical facilities are all but gone. Including In Juneau, Alaska, the capitol of the state. S.E.A.R.H.C (South East Alaska Health Consortium)Is what used to be for mostly the native American’s of Alaska’s medical facility. Now totally Gov. funded they bought out the private hospitals In the different communities. And went full on “woke” with their policies to the point of terminating Doctors. and other medical professionals because they didn’t agree with the mandated transgender & DEI policies. This could be a story within Itself. But, my Inquiry Is, within your research did you run across any Information about whether S.E.A.R.H.C, Is among the list of or maybe no longer on the list of Trans. funded medical Orgs.?
Thank you Seijah I really appreciate your work.
