A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck near Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey late Saturday night — at approximately 10:18 p.m. ET — causing tremors across parts of New Jersey, New York and beyond, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Though mild by seismic standards, the quake sent a loud boom rippling through New York City boroughs and even into southwestern Connecticut, with residents in Norwalk and Danbury reporting brief but noticeable shaking.
As the New York Post reports:
The Bergen County borough is roughly 13 miles from Midtown, with tremors reported being felt in parts of Upper Manhattan, including Hell’s Kitchen, as well as Riverdale in The Bronx and even Staten Island. No injuries or damages were immediately reported in New York City, officials said.
Earth-rattling was felt for as much as 10 seconds in parts of the Garden State, one person said, with shorter shakes also reported in Nutley, NJ, about nine miles south of Hasbrouck Heights.

Folks on Staten Island also reported hearing a remarkably loud boom.
“It almost sounded like a car hit the side of the house, the house was swaying,” said Evan Ferrer, 33, who was watching a movie with his girlfriend at their home near South Beach at the time of the rattling.
Saturday’s 3.0-magnitude quake fits a rare but notable seismic pattern in the region. A similar tremor struck near the Ramapo Fault in 1978 and was later linked to potential pressure buildup. A 1980 study from the Lamont-Doherty Observatory suggested such minor quakes could serve as early indicators of larger seismic events.
The reported shaking across Manhattan and the Bronx, despite the epicenter’s distance, reflects the East Coast’s older, denser bedrock, which transmits seismic waves more efficiently than the fault-riddled West Coast.
