Millions Of Newborns To Receive Special Social Security Cards Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday

Millions of babies born in the United States during the second half of 2026 will receive a unique keepsake commemorating the nation’s 250th birthday under a new initiative announced Wednesday by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Beginning with children born on July 2 and continuing through Dec. 31, 2026, the SSA will issue limited-edition Social Security cards featuring the official Freedom 250 logo. While the design is new, the cards will function exactly the same as standard Social Security cards and carry no changes to a child’s Social Security number or legal status.

The commemorative cards will be available only to newborns receiving their original Social Security card through the agency’s Enumeration at Birth program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers and through participating licensed midwives.

“Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement.

“The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future,” Bisignano added.

According to the SSA, parents will not need to submit any additional paperwork, register separately or pay any fees to receive the commemorative version. The special design will be issued automatically through the normal birth registration process and will come at no additional cost to families or taxpayers.

The agency said the commemorative designation is reserved exclusively for original cards issued during the six-month eligibility window. Babies born before July 2 or after Dec. 31, 2026, along with anyone requesting a replacement Social Security card later, will receive the standard design instead.

Unlike commemorative coins, stamps, or other collectibles, the limited-edition cards will become one of the first official federal documents millions of American children receive, making them a unique keepsake tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.

The announcement is the latest in a broader series of initiatives tied to America’s 250th anniversary, which the Trump administration has branded as Freedom 250. The White House has encouraged federal agencies to participate in commemorating the historic milestone through special events, educational programs, and commemorative items leading up to Independence Day.

The rollout follows several other high-profile anniversary initiatives, including President Donald Trump’s unveiling of a limited-edition “Patriot Passport” and the U.S. Mint’s release of special semiquincentennial coins and medals featuring one-year-only designs celebrating the nation’s founding.

The Freedom 250 effort is separate from America250, the bipartisan commission established by Congress in 2016 to coordinate nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
