California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) recently sent a letter to Congress requesting a hefty $40 billion in federal funding for fire relief, two weeks after his state allocated $50 million in spending to combat the Trump administration on issues ranging from immigration to other federal policies. This request for fire relief funding comes as California continues to battle the aftermath of devastating wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles.

Breitbart News reports:

President Joe Biden provided six months’ worth of funding to California before leaving office. But the rebuild will take years, and Newsom — having launched his assault on Trump — is begging for more.

In the same period that California experienced severe fires, Newsom and the Democrat-controlled state legislature pushed through legislation to fund efforts aimed at challenging former President Donald Trump’s administration. After the election, Newsom called for a special legislative session, securing funding to combat policies from the Trump administration. These bills allocated $50 million to support legal action against Trump policies, including $25 million to provide legal assistance to undocumented immigrants and another $25 million to challenge Trump’s policies in court.

In his letter to Congress, Governor Newsom emphasizes the need for federal assistance, promising that the funds will be used wisely to aid those affected by the fires. Newsom expressed his belief that Los Angeles and other affected communities will ensure that the funds are directed to individuals, property owners, businesses, and communities suffering losses from the fires.

However, Newsom’s appeal is coming at a time when the state’s management of natural resources and environmental policies has been called into question. Governor Newsom did not offer any significant changes to the state’s forest management, water management, or emergency services in exchange for the requested funding. His letter did not mention any efforts to address the underlying issues that may contribute to California’s recurring fire disasters, raising concerns about whether lessons from previous fire seasons are being learned.

Ambassador Rick Grenell, former U.S. Special Envoy for Special Missions under President Trump, has expressed skepticism about California’s ability to effectively use federal funds without stringent oversight. He pointed out that previous responses to fire seasons in the state have been inadequate, particularly in terms of forest management and water allocation.

Grenell indicated that any federal aid to California would come with conditions, possibly targeting problematic agencies like the California Coastal Commission, which he labeled as an unelected body with “crazy woke left” policies. Grenell’s comments reflect a broader concern that, if California were to receive large sums of money without oversight, the state might fall back into its old patterns of neglecting long-term solutions to the factors driving its wildfire crisis.

To ensure that fire relief funds are used appropriately, some are calling for a system of oversight similar to the one used in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In that case, the federal government appointed a “special master,” Kenneth Feinberg, to oversee the disbursement of funds through the Victims Compensation Fund. Under this model, a special master would be appointed to monitor the distribution of funds in California to ensure that money is being spent directly on fire recovery and not diverted for other political purposes.
