Settlement Tied to 2024 Interview, Future Policy Change at CBS News
Paramount Global has agreed to a $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump to end a lawsuit over its editing of a 2024 60 Minutes interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
The settlement directs the funds to support Trump’s legal expenses and his planned presidential library. Trump himself will not receive any of the money directly. Paramount admitted no wrongdoing and issued no apology.
New Rule for Political Interviews
As part of the deal, CBS News will adopt a new policy requiring full transcripts of interviews with presidential candidates to be released, with exceptions only for legal or national security reasons.
The reported $16 million settlement may be just the start — Mediaite cites a Fox News report saying that Paramount’s final payout could top $30 million:
“There is an expectation that there will be another allocation in the mid-eight figures set aside for advertisements, public service announcements, or other similar transmissions, in support of conservative causes by the network,” according to the network.
In his lawsuit, Trump accused the company of interfering in the 2024 presidential election after it edited a teaser for an interview with Harris in a way which made it look as though the then-vice president had given a different answer to a question.
In May, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s team had rejected a $15 million settlement offer and wanted “more than $25 million,” along with an apology from the company.
Merger Politics in the Background
The timing of the settlement has raised questions due to Paramount’s pending $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media — a deal that needs a green light from federal regulators.
While Paramount maintains the lawsuit resolution has no connection to the merger, analysts say removing the legal conflict could help smooth the path to approval by the Trump-led Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Internal Fallout at CBS
The move has stirred backlash inside CBS News. Critics argue the agreement sets a troubling precedent, potentially chilling editorial independence.
In the months preceding the settlement, CBS News President Wendy McMahon and 60 Minutes Executive Producer Bill Owens both resigned over the network’s handling of the lawsuit.

No surprise they equate “editorial independence” with spinning for Democrats.
