In their own words…

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is facing intense scrutiny after a Vanity Fair profile included unusually frank comments about President Trump, senior administration figures, and internal policy disputes.

The article, published after journalist Chris Whipple conducted 11 interviews with Wiles, focused on her willingness to speak on the record about issues typically handled behind closed doors. Those included disagreements over the handling of the Epstein files, immigration enforcement policy, and foreign policy challenges related to the conflict in Gaza.

While much of Trump’s inner circle stuck to careful talking points, Whipple wrote that Wiles stood out for her willingness to speak freely — and at length — on nearly everything.

As Mediaite noted, the sheer length and openness of the conversation left much of the political world stunned.

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles held nothing back in a series of on-the-record interviews with Vanity Fair in which she compared her boss’s personality to that of an alcoholic, submitted that Vice President JD Vance has been “a conspiracy theorist for a decade,” accused Elon Musk of being an “avowed ketamine” and excoriated Attorney General Pam Bondi over her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

“The Trump era is ending,” declared former Trump White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. “When top advisors feel emboldened to speak so candidly, something’s up. And I think the reaction to Rob Reiner, by all accounts a decent person with a troubled child from both the right and left is more than a surface crack.”

According to Whipple, Wiles said she personally reviewed the Epstein files and confirmed that President Trump’s name appears in them, while rejecting claims that a secret client list exists. She also pushed back on Trump’s past assertions about former President Bill Clinton, saying there is “no evidence” Clinton ever visited Jeffrey Epstein’s private island.

Wiles was sharply critical of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s handling of the Epstein matter. She said Bondi “completely whiffed” the rollout, describing an initial release of binders containing little information, followed by public claims that a witness or client list existed. “There is no client list,” Wiles said, adding that it “sure as hell wasn’t on her desk.”

In comments likely to draw the most attention, Wiles described Trump as intensely focused on retribution and resistant to her advice. She said she urged him to limit Jan. 6 pardons to nonviolent offenders and to stop settling political scores after his first 90 days, but said those pleas were ignored. She characterized Trump’s mindset as believing there is “nothing he can’t do.”

Wiles also said Trump has what she described as “an alcoholic’s personality,” explaining that her ability to manage him stems from growing up with an alcoholic father, longtime sportscaster Pat Summerall.

She was similarly blunt about others in Trump’s orbit. Wiles said Vice President JD Vance had “been a conspiracy theorist for a decade,” and suggested his shift from outspoken Trump critic to loyal ally was largely political, tied to his 2022 Senate campaign and future ambitions.

On Elon Musk, Wiles referred to him as “an avowed ketamine user” and “an odd, odd duck,” saying his behavior was often not rational and left her “aghast.”

Wiles also addressed recent immigration enforcement cases involving two mothers who were arrested and deported with their children after voluntarily attending routine check-ins. “I can’t understand how you make that mistake — but somebody did,” she said, adding that the administration needs to “look harder” at deportations to avoid similar errors.

Following the article’s publication, Wiles issued rare public remarks distancing herself from the interview. She rejected the way her comments were presented, labeling the piece a “disingenuously framed hit piece” and arguing that her remarks had been taken out of context.

The full statement reads:

The article published early this morning is a disingenuously framed hit piece on me and the finest President, White House staff, and Cabinet in history.

Significant context was disregarded and much of what I, and others, said about the team and the President was left out of the story. I assume, after reading it, that this was done to paint an overwhelmingly chaotic and negative narrative about the President and our team.

The truth is the Trump White House has already accomplished more in eleven months than any other President has accomplished in eight years and that is due to the unmatched leadership and vision of President Trump, for whom I have been honored to work for the better part of a decade.
