Senate Achieves Breakthrough on Election Reform Bill

-

A bipartisan group of senators, led by Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) has cut a deal on election reform legislation, making it harder to overturn the results of a presidential election.

The development comes after months of behind-the-scenes negotiation to create legislation to ensure an orderly transfer of presidential power.

The proposal, unveiled today, has been split into two bills.

Per CNN:

One of the bills is focused on modernizing and overhauling the Electoral Count Act, an 1887 law that Trump had sought to exploit and create confusion over how counts Electoral College votes from each state. As part of that proposal, senators are attempting to clarify that the vice president only has a ceremonial role in overseeing the certification of the electoral results. The proposal also includes key provisions intended to promote an orderly transition of presidential power by outlining guidelines for when eligible candidates can receive federal resources for a transition into office. The bill is co-sponsored by the nine Republicans and seven Democrats who announced the deal.

Mediaite adds:

The bill “would also provides clear guidelines for the transfer of power between Election Day and inauguration,” according to Axios's summary of the legislation. The bill is likely to pass the 50-50 Senate as nine Republican Senators are among the sixteen who introduced the bill. Only one additional GOP vote is needed to pass the Senate's 6–vote threshold to pass and avoid the filibuster.

The second bill aims to bolster election security by increasing federal penalties for anyone convicted of attempting to alter election results or intimidate and threaten election officials.

The bill is co-sponsored by five Republicans and seven Democrats. As notes:

While constitutional experts say the vice president currently can't disregard a state-certified electoral result, Trump pushed then-Vice President Mike Pence to obstruct the Electoral College certification in Congress as part of his pressure campaign. But Pence refused to do so and, as a result, became a target of the former President and his mob of supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Wisconsin House Speaker (R) admitted to 's WISN yesterday that Trump called him “within the last week” asking him to overturn the state's results.

According to Mediaite, Trump called after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled absentee drop boxes illegal and that citizens of the state can't have someone else return their absentee ballot:

Vos explained that the court's ruling on drop boxes, which Wisconsin used in the 2020 election, doesn't say that those boxes were illegal. “It says going forward, it can't happen,” he said.

  1. Obviously pretty soon we will just have to everybody vote Democrat; and they’ll have one picture red and one picture blue of the same democrat candidate, and you’ll be required to vote for one! Then they don’t even have to act like they counted the votes!

  2. Can just about bet without knowing the Rpublicans on the committe that every one of them is a RINO and has been called one before

  3. Vos explained that the court’s ruling on drop boxes, which Wisconsin used in the 2020 election, doesn’t say that those boxes were illegal. “It says going forward, it can’t happen,” he said.

Well that is a bold-faced lie! The only scenario where what he said could be true is if there was some new law introduced AFTER the 2020 general election that made it illegal now, not then. But no such thing took place. Courts are simply there to apply the law and that is what the Wisconsin Supreme Court did here.

    • All these “irregularities” and “new” election practices were put in place bu the Socialists and RINOs using the faux-pandemic as an excuse to steal an election, actually two elections. It worked.

  4. We’ve never had a presidential election overturned; this looks like an attempt to prevent the lawful reversal of an election result that proves fraudulent.

If an election is decided on the basis of fraud, then restoring the real result of the election is not “overturning” the election. Overturning an election is what happens when a conservative Republican wins, and the socialist insists on endless “recounts” until they manufacture just enough votes to “win.”

Unfortunately, vote fraud is incredibly difficult to ascertain after the fact. When, for example, a group of “voters” goes into polling places to vote on behalf of those who did not show up to vote for themselves, there is no difference between the ballots voted fraudulently and those voted legitimately. Same with ballot dumping and harvesting. This is why we need tighter laws against fraud, not laws making it more difficult to challenge an election believed to have been decided fraudulently.

  5. What a bunch of unamerican losers.. Democrats rigged the election now lets make sure they can do it again. Congress has fail America and her people. The voters are just plain stupid.

  6. I think this is another way to skirt the constitution by RINO’s and Democrats, This was never a rule that has been ever overlooked in the past. The job as vice president holds some processes, to delude those processes is a crime and just two people making that decision is worse. Especially two Democrats as far as I am concerned..
The west Virginian didn’t change his status to Republican as far as I know. And the Indian liar is no better.

  7. Why isn’t this unconstitutional? Isn’t any change, amendment, or “clarification” to the Constitution supposed to follow the Amendment process specified in our Constitution?

I was not aware that you can just make changes to it by passing laws.

    • You’re correct, but as usual the left thinks all they have to do is have their senile old man in the white house sign an EO and that makes it legal. That or just have the democrats push through a phony law that changes the process, and it will fly. Time for the SCOTUS to slap them down again.

  8. Well done Patrick, you seem to have caught the reason for people to have no faith in the media. Your article is a real piece of work demonstrating why Manchin is still a full fledged democrat and how turncoats from both parties can get together to screw both sides.
Your article was told from the perspective of a democrat operative and presented some things as facts that are not quite what they appear.
What is good about not being able to contest an election? If we had only been allowed to contest this one, maybe Biden’s moronic ambitions and commie tendencies wouldn’t be destroying the country. Maybe ‘Barack Obama wouldn’t be having his third term. Maybe the WEF wouldn’t be salivating at the prospect of taking over the administration of the US government.
Well done, for a democrat or RINO.

  9. Total BS !!!!! These dirtbags are trying to justify voter fraud and corruption so it can’t be fought. They will try and limit what candidates can run in an attempt to keep a candidate like Trump off the ballots. Doesn’t say that yet but hang right on — they will get to it. They will try and make sure that every candidate has to be a career hack member of their corrupt circle to keep their corruption in tack. You can bet that every so-called repub who is behind this is a rino and a never Trumper to the nth degree.

  10. No way is this good. That is because the leftist democrats will continue to steal elections and eventually have control of all Congress and then pass every evil freedom and country destroying bill it can dream up. What is needed is tougher voter certification laws and some independent process to certify the results.

  11. My opinion they need to finish the job, Election Reform > Again just my opinion need to stop the politicians from around country begging for donations when they don’t represent. Money sorry but way to much money spent. Should be restricted to state money donations, don’t need outside money involved !!!
