In a major shakeup, the Trump administration has removed Admiral Linda Fagan, the Coast Guard’s first female commandant, citing concerns over prioritization and leadership.

Leadership Change Amid Controversy

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman announced Admiral Fagan’s dismissal on Monday night, with a senior DHS official attributing the decision to ongoing concerns about recruitment, operations and her focus on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives over border security priorities.

Admiral Fagan had assumed the role of commandant on June 1, 2022, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to lead the Coast Guard. Despite her long and illustrious career, her tenure as commandant was marred by what many described as incompetence in addressing border security challenges and meeting recruitment goals.

Official Announcement

Fox News first reported on Fagan’s removal, highlighting that an ALCOAST message—an internal memo to all Coast Guard members—confirmed the decision. The message read:

“Under my statutory authority as the Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security I have relieved Admiral Linda L. Fagan of her duties as Commandant of the United States Coast Guard. She served a long and illustrious career, and I thank her for her service to our nation.”

Vice Commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday will step in as acting commandant until a permanent replacement is appointed.

The DHS official said Fagan had significant failures in recruiting personnel, which worsened issues related to operational readiness. The official added that the lack of innovative strategies to address retention struggles in critical specialties weakened workforce sustainability.

Under her leadership, there were also persistent delays and cost overruns in acquiring essential platforms, including icebreakers and helicopters, that the official said undermined Coast Guard capabilities in the Arctic and other strategic regions. The official further cited inadequate accountability for acquisition failures that were highlighted during President Trump’s first administration.

Fagan also made DEI policies a priority, including at the Coast Guard Academy, which diverted resources and focus from operational essentials.

In Operation Fouled Anchor, the cover-up of sexual assaults at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy “deeply eroded trust” in the Coast Guard among the American public, the U.S. Congress and the military. The Coast Guard did not disclose the existence of Operation Fouled Anchor until 2023, despite its existence from 2014 to 2019.

What’s Next for the Coast Guard?

With Admiral Lunday stepping in, the Coast Guard faces the dual challenges of restoring operational trust and meeting recruitment and security goals in the months ahead.

Now we need to replace Gen C.Q. Brown, USAF – Chairman of the JCS – who is also a purveyor of DEI policies!

If you have EVER served, you know that flag-rank officers serve “at the pleasure” of the president of the U.S. That starts with the rank of “Major” (USAF), and goes all the way up to 4-star General. General Brown, USAF, has served a very long time in the military. He was looking at his pension, when DEI was instituted, and he probably had no choice but to just “go along”, as he (once more) is considered “flag rank officer”. My dad retired with the rank of Major, USAF. There were many things going on in 1969 that he was not happy about, but he had to go along with it. Have you considered that these “generals” who are considered “woke” are just “going along with Biden–at the time of DEI instituted” ? They were also looking at their pension, as they have served one heck of a LOT of years to our country. If I was in that situation, I would have considered that possibility. So don’t slam all of them, the generals, academies, everything, until you look up how long they have served, and what they have to lose. I am a USAF Vietnam-era Vet. That’s how I know what the civilian population does not. I did not go to “Nam because I’m female and enlisted. Served stateside, as they did not allow females to fight back in 1969. DEI is on its way out. Just give it time, and that includes the military.

DEI sycophants usually end up on the wrong end of what’s “supposed” to happen. It’s true. Go “Woke” go “Broke”, and that includes the USCG. She will be retired quietly, and the next one to take the office will be charged with straightening out the wrongs she committed. It won’t take long. As a result of getting rid of DEI in the military, morale will immediately improve at least 95%, by my prediction, and past policies will fall back into place.

If she’s not doing the job and only interested in DEI Policies, then she should be removed. My late husband was a 20 year Coast Guard veteran mostly spent in Air Search and Rescue and was proud of his service career. How disappointed he would be today for the mark Fagan has left on the Coast Guard.
