Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

The Trump administration made good on its promise to reward federal aviation workers who kept the nation’s transportation system running during the 43-day government shutdown, as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem personally delivered $10,000 bonus checks to more than 20 TSA officers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston on Thursday.

The gesture is the first wave of several thousand bonuses that will be distributed to TSA personnel nationwide, according to NBC News — a decision President Donald Trump first teased in a Truth Social post, praising the “distinguished service” of air traffic controllers and TSA agents who worked without pay during the shutdown.

Noem: “Outstanding Patriotism and Service”

At a press conference on the airport concourse, Noem praised the workers who continued to screen passengers, staff checkpoints, and maintain security operations despite going more than a month without pay.

“What I’m here talking about today is the outstanding patriotism and service of our TSA officers and officials that stepped up every single day,” Noem said. “They went above and beyond. They helped individuals. They served extra shifts. They helped with transportation of people getting back and forth to work.”

Shutdown Ends, But Travel Disruptions Linger

Trump officially ended the shutdown late Wednesday by signing a stopgap funding bill to reopen the federal government through January 30. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said furloughed federal workers will receive their back pay early next week, restoring paychecks that were halted for more than six weeks.

Still, the aviation system is not expected to snap back immediately. Airlines for America warned of ongoing disruptions as airports and airlines attempt to return to normal staffing and scheduling. As of Thursday, air traffic restrictions held at 6%, an improvement from earlier projections of 10%.

Trump: “I’ll Get the Money From Someplace”

Trump first floated the idea of $10,000 bonus checks during an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham earlier this week. When asked how the bonuses would be funded, Trump brushed off concerns.

“I don’t know. I’ll get it from someplace… I always get the money from someplace regardless,” he said.

The bonuses, Trump insisted, were simply “the American way” — rewarding loyalty and courage during a uniquely difficult moment for federal workers.

A Symbolic Gesture With Real Impact

The payments serve several political functions for the administration:

  • Boosting morale among essential workers who were asked to endure the longest shutdown in U.S. history
  • Reinforcing Trump’s image as a leader who rewards loyalty and performance
  • Demonstrating executive action in the wake of public frustration

For TSA officers who worked double shifts, covered for colleagues unable to afford commuting costs, or fielded angry passengers as lines grew and wait times ballooned — the bonuses represent not just financial relief, but recognition.

As the federal government reopens and flight schedules inch toward stability, the Trump administration is now highlighting the workers who held the system together — and signaling that loyalty will be rewarded, even in the most turbulent political storms.

Good for them. There is someone in office that actually rewards those that do their duty in the tough times! The Dems/Socialists/Communists want to give 5K a month to illegals for an illegal vote plus free health care, free housing low interest cars and houses, free phones, internet. Free this, free that for on Citizens. Not a thankful one in their lot except for Senator Fetterman that can be seen.
