President Donald Trump has appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as the interim administrator of NASA, signaling a major shift in the space agency’s leadership.
The move comes after the White House withdrew tech billionaire Jared Isaacman from consideration for the top NASA role. His exit reportedly stemmed from concerns over his close ties to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
Duffy, a former congressman, district attorney, reality TV star, and political commentator, had previously clashed with Musk in Cabinet meetings over issues tied to air traffic safety and satellite regulation.
His appointment comes as NASA faces mounting challenges, including potential budget cuts and staffing reductions. The agency is simultaneously pressing forward with plans to return astronauts to the moon by 2027 and to accelerate human exploration of Mars.
Duffy’s temporary elevation is widely viewed as a strategic pivot — both to distance itself from Musk’s influence and to realign the agency with Trump’s “America First” space policy.
Per Politico:
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday evening that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will also serve temporarily as the head of NASA.
“Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job in handling our Country’s Transportation Affairs, including creating a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control systems, while at the same time rebuilding our roads and bridges, making them efficient, and beautiful, again,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time. Congratulations, and thank you, Sean!”
In an X post shortly after, Duffy wrote: “Honored to accept this mission. Time to take over space. Let’s launch.” He added various emojis, including a rocket.
It wasn’t clear how long the arrangement would last. DOT, NASA and the White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
In his new dual role, Duffy will continue to oversee federal transportation programs and safety initiatives while steering NASA through a period of fiscal restraint and aggressive expansion.
No permanent nominee has been named yet. However, speculation is swirling around retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven L. Kwast, a vocal advocate for militarizing space and a longtime proponent of a national strategy centered on space dominance — a stance closely aligned with the administration’s vision.
Until a permanent administrator is confirmed, Duffy will remain at the helm of both the Department of Transportation and NASA, balancing leadership of two high-stakes federal agencies at a critical juncture.

I hope Trump and Musk’s competing with each other won’t cause us harm.
I am frustrated with how Elon Musk is being treated. Did we forget what he and DOGE have done for us? There must be a way to negotiate the EV mandate from the biig beautiful bill that would be acceptablle to both parties. I am a President Trump supporter but there are these little thing that bother me!
Respectfully,
Mary.
I am not sure as to how I feel about Musk. He is a special person that is not perfect but has talents beyond many others and just like all others, he makes mistakes. I am not sure if he certainly should have accolades for many of his achievements, to include his DOGE accomplishments. I have been a NASA critic for a long time with NASA being way too political and money hungry and over all, failing in its important space mission. Musk proved all of that with his SpaceX and other accomplishments. NASA should be reorganized and redirected to be superior to all other space agencies…anywhere…but it is not. It can’t even rescue its own astronauts stranded in space! NASA needs to be the premier space program bar all others in accomplishments. If one person can do something spectacular [Musk] so can someone else, with appropriate effort. NASA is simply failing in this endeavor!!! Perhaps NASA simply needs more private sector competition to achieve loftier goals!!! Put Elon as NASA head honcho! That would shake everybody up. Maybe he would start using some of the hidden ET classified stuff. Now about other stuff…Elon has had to secret clearance with DOGE and has seen all of the EPSTEIN files. Perhaps, when Elon speaks of these files…we should…listen…but, remember, Elon is not infallible and his understand of that which he sees and reads my be misunderstood… For example, Elon intimated that Trump was at “the Island” because he saw his name on the list of ‘clients’. Trump has emphatically said he was never at that island but did use Epstein’s jet, along with his wife, but with no disclosed purpose. It appears as though Epstein’s legal ties are an a sundry mix with clandestine unethical activities that no one should be involved with.
