Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

On Friday, former President Donald Trump attended a legal hearing to appeal the verdict in the E. Jean Carroll assault case.

The hearing took place at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City. Trump is challenging the ruling that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation in Carroll’s civil lawsuit.

The session was brief, with one of the judges stating, “We will take this case under advisement.” The outcome of the appeal will determine whether the $5 million judgment against Trump will stand.

Last year, a federal jury ruled that while Trump wasn’t liable for rape, he was found guilty of sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll. This resulted in a $5 million judgment against him. Carroll has since pursued further legal action, claiming Trump’s comments damaged her reputation.

Carroll, a former columnist for Elle, accused Trump of assaulting her in the 1990s. Trump denied the claims, calling her allegations a “hoax” and saying she wasn’t “his type.” After she went public, Carroll sued Trump for defamation. Initially, the Department of Justice under Bill Barr tried to shield Trump by arguing his comments were made in his official role as president, but that attempt was struck down, allowing the case to move forward.

In 2022, New York’s Adult Survivors Act reopened the door for Carroll to file a new civil lawsuit against Trump for sexual battery and defamation, even after the statute of limitations had passed. A jury ruled in her favor, holding Trump liable for sexual abuse, defamation, and awarding her $5 million in damages.

But Trump didn’t stop there – he continued making disparaging remarks about Carroll, leading to further legal consequences. These additional damages include emotional harm and reputational damage, adding up to a whopping $83.3 million.

Newsweek has more information about the results of and lingering questions from Friday’s hearing:

The hearing Trump had just come from Friday wrapped up after 25 minutes without a decision on whether a new trial could occur. A decision is unlikely before November’s presidential election.

Elsewhere in New York on Friday, Judge Juan Merchan handed Trump a big legal win, postponing the sentencing for his New York fraud conviction until after the 2024 election.

Friday’s appeal hearing signals that the legal battle with Carroll is far from over.
