“Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people,” he added.
Speaking from the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, Trump claimed Washington, D.C.’s murder rate is higher than in some of the most violent places on earth.
Trump invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to justify the federal takeover, framing it as necessary to restore order. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized the federal intervention, arguing that it undermines local governance and that the city’s crime rates are declining.
The deployment of the National Guard in D.C. is legally complex. Unlike other states, the District of Columbia does not have a governor; instead, the president serves as the commander-in-chief of the D.C. National Guard. This unique structure allows for federal control without the need for state approval.
Monday’s development follows a similar federal intervention in Los Angeles earlier this year, where Trump deployed National Guard troops and Marines amid protests.
