President Trump will unveil a new crime-fighting initiative in the nation’s capital this morning, a move aides say will help set Washington, D.C., free.
The U.S. military is reportedly preparing to deploy the National Guard to Washington, as part of his initiative, following the recent assault of a former government staffer — an incident Trump cited as evidence of the city’s deteriorating safety.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller posted on X early Monday: “DC will be SET FREE.”
About an hour earlier, the president used his own social media platform to proclaim that Washington would be “liberated” today. With his trademark cadence, Trump wrote: “Crime, Savagery, Filth, and Scum will DISAPPEAR. I will, MAKE OUR CAPITAL GREAT AGAIN!”

The statement comes as White House figures show a 99.9% drop in illegal immigrant releases since Trump returned to office on Jan. 20, 2025.
Despite several recent high-profile incidents, overall crime in D.C. is down. By mid-2025, violent crime had fallen by an estimated 22% to 26% compared with the same period in 2024. Overall crime dropped about 7% year over year.
However, the city’s violent crime rate still sits above the national average and remains high by historical standards, especially compared with the 1990s peak.
NBC4 Washington reports the president will address the nation at 10 a.m. to outline his plans to tackle crime and clean up the capital:
Trump wrote in a social media post that he would speak at the White House about plans to make D.C. “safer and more beautiful than it ever was before.”
“The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote Sunday. “We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”

Last week, the president directed federal law enforcement agencies to increase their presence in Washington for seven days, with the option “to extend as needed.”
On Friday night, federal agencies including the Secret Service, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service assigned more than 120 officers and agents to assist in Washington.
On Sunday, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser rejected claims that the city is spiraling out of control. In an MSNBC interview, she said comparing D.C. to “a war-torn country is hyperbolic and false.”
In a separate interview with NewsNation, Miller argued the opposite, claiming “Washington, D.C. is more violent than Baghdad … It is more violent than parts of Ethiopia,” as Trump’s threat to federalize the city hangs over the nation’s capital.
