Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance welcomed their fourth child Sunday, marking a historic milestone as the first baby born to a sitting United States vice president in more than 150 years.
Vance announced the birth of the couple’s son, Alec Neel Vance, in a social media post, explaining that both mother and baby are doing well.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” Vance wrote. “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”
The vice president also expressed gratitude to the medical teams who cared for his family during the delivery.
“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing,” he wrote. “We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family.”
Historic Addition to the Second Family
According to the Associated Press, Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting vice president since the 19th century, making the birth a rare historical event in American politics.
The newest member of the Vance family joins older siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
The vice president has frequently spoken about the importance of family throughout his political career, often describing fatherhood as one of the defining aspects of his life.
An Interfaith Household
Usha Vance, an attorney, became the nation’s first Hindu Second Lady when her husband took office.
The couple met while attending Yale Law School and have previously discussed raising their children in an interfaith household. Although Usha practices Hinduism, Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, has said they mutually decided to raise their children as Christians while maintaining open conversations about both faith traditions.
He added that their two oldest children attend a Christian school and shared that his eldest son was “very proud of his First Communion.”
Balancing Public Life and Parenthood
Before becoming vice president, the Vance family lived in Cincinnati, where JD Vance represented Ohio in the United States Senate before joining President Donald Trump’s 2024 ticket.
Since moving to Washington, the couple has emphasized providing stability for their children despite the demands of public life.
In a 2025 interview with Fox News, Vance said he and Usha were focused on delivering “as much normalcy to the kids in a very abnormal situation.”
The Vance children have occasionally accompanied their parents on official engagements. Last spring, all three traveled with the vice president and second lady to India during an official visit that included meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stops at several of the country’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Taj Mahal.
With the arrival of Alec Neel Vance, the second family begins a new chapter while carving out a small piece of White House history.
