Nebraska Legislators Fail to Address Pro-Life Legislation

Members of Nebraska’s unicameral legislature recently fell short of deciding to return to Lincoln to pass pro-life legislation this year.

Only 30 of the chamber’s 49 legislators voted in favor of holding a special session that would have rolled the state’s existing abortion laws back to restricting abortions at 12 weeks gestation, instead of the 20 weeks, which is currently law. Three more votes were needed to call the special session.

Senator Julie Slama of Nebraska’s State Senate District 1 shared the following post on her Facebook page, slamming her colleagues for refusing to call a special session — especially those that ran as pro-life candidates.

Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement after he was informed of the news by Mike Hilgers, the Speaker of the Legislature. In his statement, he urged Nebraskans to “have more conversations on the value we place on human life so more meaningful protections can be passed” in the state.

Earlier this month the state of Kansas, which borders Nebraska, gave voters a chance to grant legislators authority to make laws about abortion via an amendment to the constitution that would’ve said there is no right to an abortion guaranteed in the document. That was known as the “Value Them Both” amendment. Voters rejected the amendment, with 59% voting it down.
