Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is positioning himself to the political right of President-elect Donald Trump on the H-1B visa program. DeSantis has openly criticized the program, which allows U.S. companies to hire foreign workers in specialized fields like technology and engineering, calling it horrible and a tool for corporate exploitation. His vocal opposition to the visa program comes amid growing backlash from American workers who feel they are being displaced by imported labor.
The controversy erupted following the announcement of Sriram Krishnam as Trump’s Senior Policy Advisor on Artificial Intelligence, garnering the attention of his base due to Krishnam’s stated positions on H1-B Visas.
Tech leaders — including prominent Trump administration picks Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy — came to his defense and professed overwhelming
Trump, who has often touted his America First immigration policies, signaled support for the H-1B program as a means for major corporations—such as Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX—to import foreign workers at a lower cost. This move by Trump has created a rift within the GOP, with DeSantis seizing the opportunity to differentiate himself from the incoming administration and stake a more hardline position on migration.
During a January 9 press conference, he explained his opposition to the program while discussing his intentions to appoint a staunch critic of the H-1B visa to the Senate seat vacated by outgoing Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). The governor wasted no time in denouncing the program as detrimental to American workers, particularly U.S. college graduates who are increasingly squeezed out of the labor market.
“H-1B visas have been used to bring in people who can perform tasks at much cheaper rates than American workers,” DeSantis remarked. “We’ve had situations where companies bring in H-1B workers, and U.S. workers have to train their own replacements, only to be fired afterward. How is that in the best interest of the American people?”
The governor continued, arguing that the program has created an unfair and exploitative dynamic where foreign workers are beholden to the corporations that sponsor them. “When the corporation brings them in, the H-1Bs work for less. They’re basically indentured servants. If Google brings you in, you can’t just show up and work for Microsoft because they pay you more. You’re indebted to Google.”
While Trump has long championed limiting illegal immigration, his support for the H-1B program has left some of his base disillusioned. Many working-class GOP voters see the program as a direct threat to their economic prospects.
As Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, noted, DeSantis is taking advantage of the “disconnect” between Trump and his voter base on this issue. “This is just normal political jockeying,” Krikorian said in an interview with Breitbart News. “It would not exist if the President were an actual restrictionist and was in tune with his own voters on this issue.”
According to recent reports, the program has led to the displacement of thousands of U.S. college graduates, particularly in fields like engineering, computer science, and accounting. In 2022, approximately 230,000 Americans graduated with engineering or computer-related degrees, yet many of these graduates are unable to secure jobs due to the influx of foreign workers filling these positions at lower wages.
A 2021 government report revealed that around half of U.S. graduates in these fields struggle to find entry-level positions, as companies favor cheaper foreign labor, often sourced through the H-1B program. This trend has fueled growing frustration among American workers, particularly those in the tech industry, who feel that they are being overlooked in favor of imported labor willing to work for less.

I hold Governor DeSantis in high esteem, and I also feel the SAME way about President Trump, but we need to RE-AMERICANIZE OUR WORKFORCE IN AMERICA, while, at the same time holding down the URGE to inflate all aspects of our economy. In other Words, get rid of the, “i want more, I want more, i deserve more, ATTITUDE, in our work-force….
HB-1 visas have run their course. It is time to return to an America First hiring policy. This is a major point of contention that I have with the DOGE boys.
