Before closing arguments finished in the latest defamation suit brought by E. Jean Carroll, former President Donald Trump left federal court.
The decision surprised reporters covering the trial.
However, Trump remained unmoved, taking to Truth Social 90 minutes later to lash out at Judge Lewis Kaplan.
Following his appearance at today's proceedings, Trump wrote: “Judge Kaplan refuses to allow the Anderson Cooper Interview on CNN of E. Jean Carroll wherein Carroll says, ‘Rape is sexy,' and numerous other things that totally exonerate me. Judge Kaplan is refusing me my Constitutional Right to Due Process, to defend myself against this False Accusation. This is a one-sided trial, where the other side is allowed everything, and we are allowed nothing. He is an extremely abusive individual, the likes of which few have seen before!”
Judge Kaplan chided Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, earlier this week for attempt to present slides at trial without having introduced them as evidence to the court.
A New York jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation against Carroll in May 2023. Carroll was awarded $5 million. Since then, the presidential front-runner has called Carroll “crazy” and a “liar.”
This time, Carroll's attorneys are seeking at least $24 million for emotionally distress, plus additional penalties to act as a check against Trump's ongoing public comments.
Trump continues to adamantly deny the charges.
