On Friday night’s episode of HBO’s Real Time, comedian and host Bill Maher offered a detailed account of his recent dinner with President Donald Trump, describing the meeting as unexpectedly civil, candid, and even enjoyable. The encounter, which Maher said was intended to model the importance of dialogue between ideological opposites, showcased a version of Trump that Maher admitted he didn’t know — one willing to listen, laugh at jokes at his own expense, and engage in honest back-and-forth, even with a long-time critic.
Maher clarified that despite the warmth of the exchange, he didn’t agree with many of Trump’s ideas and hadn’t changed his mind politically. “MAGA fans, don’t worry,” he said. “Your boy gave me nothing — just hats. Hats and a very generous amount of time and a willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend, even though I’m not MAGA — which was the point of the dinner.”
One moment that stood out to Maher was their shared disdain for the cultural pressure to avoid dialogue altogether. “We agreed — the people who don’t even want us to talk? We don’t like you,” Maher recounted. “Don’t talk? As opposed to what? Writing the same editorial for the millionth time and making 25-hour speeches into the wind, really? That’s what liberals have?”
Maher expressed surprise at how relaxed he felt during the dinner, especially compared to his interactions with past Democratic presidents. “Honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump,” he admitted. “I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him.”
Maher also noted that Trump was more self-aware and receptive to criticism than his public persona suggests. “He asked for my opinion on the Iran nuclear deal and other real issues,” Maher said. “He didn’t flinch when I criticized him for pulling out of it — and he even laughed at jokes I made about him.”
Still, Maher emphasized that a pleasant dinner doesn’t change the stakes of Trump’s global leadership. “It doesn’t matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian. It matters who he is on the world stage.”
While Maher doesn’t believe the dinner changed Trump’s policy outlook — “I don’t think he’ll change anything,” he said — the meeting served as a cultural litmus test. “To me,” Maher concluded, “it’s emblematic of why Democrats are so unpopular these days. The inability to engage — to even talk — is costing them.”
Following Maher’s surprisingly positive account of the meeting, which he described as “gracious,” “measured,” and refreshingly open, Olbermann took to X (formerly Twitter) with a scorched-earth critique of the Real Time host, accusing him of selling out for professional gain.
“BTW don’t overanalyze Maher prostituting himself to Trump,” Olbermann posted. “Maher works for the same fascists at Warner who took over and corrupted CNN.” Olbermann, who claims a personal history with Maher dating back to 1978, didn’t stop there. “He was a shameless opportunist with no real principles then and he remains so. This is so he can keep his HBO show,” he wrote, characterizing Maher’s overtures to Trump as a transactional maneuver rather than a sincere effort at political dialogue.
The nuance was seemingly lost on Olbermann — and even surprised another long-time Maher guest: Geraldo Rivera. The NewsNation correspondent-at-large, who was once scolded on Maher’s show in 2018 for defending Trump as “warm” and “friendly” in private, expressed surprise at the shift in tone. “He really was very insulting,” Rivera recalled. “He challenged my judgment. He mocked my feelings for the president.” Rivera labeled Maher’s new approach “hypocritical,” though ultimately said he welcomed any effort to cool political tensions. “We don’t have to attack, we don’t have to disparage, we don’t have to put down,” he said. “I am not upset that he’s come around.”

Well that was kind of refreshing from a Donald Trump critic.
Well my mind has not changed on Bill Maher either. 🙂
DIALOG vs MONOLOG
I swear the Democrats just stand in the corner, repeating, repeating and never looking over their shoulder to find out what is REALLY going on.
All I ever hear from the Democrats is “We have to fight Trump and the Republicans” No Dialog, no talking, inciting fear and hate. Over 50% of Democrats recently polled said it would be ok to assisinate our POTUS !!!!!
We had someone post recently on our local community Facebook page how they wanted to move to our area, but no MAGA, no friendly neighbors, just LEAVE US ALONE. I thnk they should stay where they are at and not come to our community with that kind of attitude.
