USA Today sports columnist Nancy Armour is facing a wave of criticism after arguing that Caitlin Clark’s behavior on the court can contribute to racist harassment directed at black players in the WNBA, condemned by many as unfair and inflammatory.

Armour made the remarks in a July 23 column examining Clark’s interactions with referees and opponents, suggesting the Indiana Fever star has a responsibility to consider how her actions are interpreted by some members of her fan base.

Armour Raises Concerns About Clark’s Influence

In her column, Armour argued that Clark’s reactions to physical play—including contesting fouls and confronting referees—do not occur “in a vacuum.”

She wrote that there appears to be “a white nationalist element” within Clark’s fan base and argued that some of those supporters view Clark “as a white woman in need of saving” when they believe she has been treated unfairly by officials or opposing players.

Armour noted that the WNBA is composed predominantly of black women, many of whom identify as LGBTQ, and insisted that inflammatory reactions from a subset of fans can spill over into harassment of players.

She also referenced the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, writing that the United States has “an awful history of Black people being harmed, even killed, in the name of ‘defending’ white women.”

Armour argued that while the league has a responsibility to protect its players, Clark should also recognize the broader “consequences” of her public conduct during games.

Debate Over Physical Play

Clark has been one of the WNBA’s most heavily defended—and heavily fouled—players since entering the league, with numerous hard fouls and physical confrontations generating widespread discussion among fans and analysts.

Many argue that Clark has been subjected to unusually physical defense and has every right to question officiating when calls are missed.

Armour’s column quickly drew criticism from conservative commentators, who accused her of unfairly blaming Clark for the actions of a small number of online users.

Critics argued there is no evidence Clark has encouraged racist behavior or that her complaints to referees have led to real-world violence against other players.

Some also objected to Armour’s comparison to the historical lynching of black Americans, calling the analogy inappropriate and inflammatory in the context of professional basketball.

Others argued the column minimizes the physical treatment Clark has received on the court by suggesting she exaggerates or embellishes contact.

Broader Conversation Continues

Clark’s arrival in the WNBA has dramatically increased television ratings, attendance and media attention, but it has also intensified debate over race, officiating, physical play and fan behavior.

League officials have repeatedly condemned racist and abusive comments directed at players and have said harassment of any athlete is unacceptable.
