Left-wing commentator and former MSNBC host Joy Reid is facing backlash after accusing Republicans of using rap star Nicki Minaj as a political prop to gain “cultural cool” credibility.
During a recent appearance on The Don Lemon Show hosted by Don Lemon, Reid launched into a pointed critique of Minaj, who has publicly expressed support for Donald Trump and certain conservative policy positions.
“There’s a reason that the other side is giddy about having Nicki Minaj,” Reid said, arguing that Republicans “despise” and “don’t respect” the rapper but embrace her for political optics. She went further, claiming conservatives want her “on a leash as their house pet, cuddled at Donald Trump’s feet,” in order to borrow from what she described as black America’s cultural influence.
“Black cultural cool has always been a powerful, powerful element in the country,” Reid said, suggesting that Republicans are seeking to leverage Minaj’s celebrity to broaden their appeal.
Personal Criticism and Political Divide
Reid’s remarks quickly turned personal. She criticized Minaj’s career standing and brand influence, comparing her unfavorably to fellow music stars Rihanna and Beyoncé, and referenced rapper Cardi B as “better at cultural marketing.”
Reid also questioned Minaj’s political positioning as an immigrant, stating that the rapper, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in the United States, “clearly don’t care that much about black people or immigrants.”
In one of her more controversial lines, Reid accused Republicans of looking for “somebody black to be the face to put blackface on MAGA.”
Minaj has not issued a direct response to Reid’s comments. However, she has previously defended her political independence and has spoken out on issues ranging from religious persecution abroad to skepticism of government mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Broader Political Context
Minaj’s willingness to break from the majority of high-profile black entertainers who align with Democratic politics has drawn both praise and criticism. Some conservative commentators have welcomed her as an example of ideological diversity within the entertainment industry.
Reid’s comments have ignited debate online, with critics accusing her of suggesting that black public figures who support conservatives are being manipulated or lack agency. Supporters of Reid argue she was highlighting what she sees as performative outreach efforts by Republicans seeking to expand their appeal among minority voters.
Minaj’s fanbase, known as the “Barbz,” has been vocal on social media in defending the artist, with some users expressing frustration with intolerance toward dissenting political views within entertainment and media circles.
The exchange underscores ongoing tensions within American political discourse, where celebrity endorsements, race, and party affiliation continue to collide in increasingly personal and public ways.
