Former MSNBC host Joy Reid and liberal commentator Wajahat Ali are facing criticism after making sweeping remarks about “weak white conservative men” during a recent episode of “The Joy Reid Show,” where the pair targeted President Donald Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and conservatives more broadly.

During the discussion, Ali portrayed conservative men as fragile and unable to handle criticism.

“These weak, pathetic, fragile, brittle, porcelain teacups,” Ali said. “They can dish it, but they can’t take it.”

Ali also accused conservatives of demanding protections and civility for themselves while denying it to others.

“They demand safe spaces for themselves. No safe spaces for anyone else,” Ali said. “They demand civility but give only cruelty.”

Reid agreed with Ali’s comments and argued that America has historically elevated unqualified white men into positions of power while holding women and minorities to higher standards.

“This is what America was built on in telling these weak-chinned, unaccomplished mediocrities that the meritocracy means they get everything they want,” Reid said.

The former MSNBC host also specifically criticized President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“Donald Trump is not qualified to be president of the United States,” Reid said.

Reid additionally mocked Hegseth’s appointment as defense secretary, suggesting his appearance played a role in his selection.

“You’re qualified to be secretary of defense … simply because you’re a white guy who Donald Trump thinks is attractive,” Reid said.

Ali argued conservatives were encouraging white men to believe they can succeed without merit or effort, while both commentators accused the Trump Administration of replacing women and minorities in leadership roles.

“They got rid of women, black people — especially women of color,” Ali said.

“These dumb*ss mediocre men purged all the women and people of color for their bros,” he later added.

The remarks quickly prompted backlash, as many accused Reid and Ali of engaging in broad racial and gender-based attacks while presenting themselves as opponents of discrimination.

Critics also argued there was significant irony in the pair’s comments, particularly regarding accusations that conservatives “can dish it but can’t take it.” Opponents pointed to numerous examples where progressive activists and commentators have reacted intensely to criticism, comedy, dissenting opinions or political opposition while simultaneously championing aggressive rhetoric against conservatives.

Some conservatives noted that progressive spaces frequently advocate for ideologically exclusive environments on college campuses, in workplaces and online platforms while condemning similar behavior from the political right. Others pointed to left-wing calls for speech policing, deplatforming and content moderation while figures like Reid and Ali regularly use inflammatory rhetoric themselves.

Critics additionally argued Reid and Ali’s comments reflected a broader contradiction inside progressive politics, where activists often condemn identity-based generalizations while simultaneously making sweeping negative statements about groups such as White men, conservatives or Christians.

The controversy also reignited debates surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion policies, with opponents arguing some progressive rhetoric increasingly frames social advancement not around equal opportunity but around the idea that certain groups are owed institutional advantages because of historical marginalization.

Conservatives also highlighted the assassination of Charlie Kirk, after which many left-wing activists and online commentators mocked or celebrated his death, arguing such behavior undercuts claims that progressive politics are uniquely compassionate or tolerant.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle criticized Reid in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“There’s a reason Joy Reid’s show got canceled. Her takes were too dumb even for MSDNC,” Ingle said. “I lose brain cells every time I have the displeasure of hearing her speak.”

The controversy also reignited debate over Democratic messaging toward male voters, particularly white working-class men — a demographic Republicans have gained support with in recent election cycles.

Some Democratic strategists have warned that rhetoric attacking white men as a group risks further alienating voters the party has struggled to retain, especially as Republicans increasingly frame Democrats as hostile toward traditional masculinity and mainstream American culture.

The exchange also highlights Reid’s evolving media presence since MSNBC canceled “The ReidOut” in February 2025 during a broader restructuring effort at the network. Since leaving MSNBC, Reid has continued political commentary through online appearances and independent media projects, often using an even more openly activist tone.

Ali, a frequent progressive commentator and columnist, has similarly built a reputation for aggressive criticism of conservatives on issues involving race, politics and culture.

Joy Reid tries so hard that it’s pathetic. It’s sad that she has no brain but a head full of rotten tomatoes.

    Deplorable Mark

Senile SloJoe was qualified to be president? And Joyless got her news reader job on pure merit?

    speedle

If I were a black woman, I would be completely embarrassed by this moron. Joy Reid has to be the dumbest person on the planet and completely unqualified to be influencing people with her simple-minded racist comments.
