Supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement are embracing a new label that has recently been used by European elites to criticize them: “Brutal Americans.” The term, first coined in a recent article by Anne Applebaum for The Atlantic, is meant to describe the aggressive and unapologetic stance taken by figures like President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in their foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Applebaum, a dual Polish and U.S. citizen known for her support of the “liberal world order” and advocacy for military interventions, used the term in the context of the Trump administration’s efforts to broker peace in Europe. Applebaum claimed that the “brutal” label stemmed from a confrontation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the latter was accused of rejecting calls for a ceasefire. In her piece, Applebaum asserted that the behavior of Trump and Vance—who both advocate for a more isolationist and peace-oriented foreign policy—has created a new stereotype for Americans. According to Applebaum, this new image of America, dubbed the “brutal American,” stands in stark contrast to the idealized figure of the “good guys” from Hollywood’s golden age.
Applebaum’s article painted the Trump administration’s pro-peace stance as a betrayal of what she sees as America’s historical role as a global enforcer, a role she believes is best served through military intervention and support for NATO’s strategic interests. However, MAGA supporters have turned the criticism into a point of pride, embracing the term “Brutal American” as a badge of honor. The viral reaction among conservatives has been marked by a sense of defiance toward the European elites, with many drawing on imagery of American toughness from Hollywood cowboys, war heroes, and pioneers.
“Why bother coming up with good branding when your enemies will do it for you?” quipped Blaze columnist Auron MacIntyre in response to the article. Many others in the MAGA camp echoed similar sentiments, sharing iconic images of Clint Eastwood and other American icons, with some humorously declaring, “Stop making us sound cool.” Another user on social media pointed out the historical irony, saying, “It was the brutal American that liberated Europe twice in the span of a generation. They then go on to embrace socialism, a betrayal of Western values. Maybe it’s them who has divorced themselves from the West.”
The article has also sparked a broader conversation about Europe’s defense responsibilities. Many MAGA supporters believe that the European Union has become too dependent on the United States for military protection, and Trump’s calls for NATO members to increase their own defense spending have resonated with them. Since Trump’s pressure, several European countries—including France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom—have announced plans to significantly ramp up military spending, a shift that reflects the growing impact of Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.
Ultimately, the embrace of the “Brutal American” label signals a growing divide between the MAGA movement and the Europeans who have long benefitted from the American taxpayer. While Applebaum’s article was intended as a critique of the Trump administration’s foreign policy, it has instead been transformed into a rallying cry for those who feel that America’s global role needs to be redefined—one that prioritizes peace and self-sufficiency over endless interventionism. For MAGA supporters, being called “brutal” is a small price to pay for a stronger, more independent America that isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo on the world stage.

I don’t think the Trump Administration has to apologize for anything. Maybe her U.S.citizenship should be revoked. We have toooooo many liberals in this country who can’t think for hemselves.
As long as USA government allowed NATO members to use and take unfair advantage of US taxpayers, we were good guys. As soon as we call for those leaches to pony up their agreed upon fair share – we become the bad guys. I was an American member of our military presence in in occupied Germany as a NATO force. Served proudly. Loved the Germans i got to know.; however, what is fair and right – is fair and right. Trump’s stance is correct, even though his approach is sometimes questionably rough.
I’ll add that to despicable, deplorable, religious nut, dregs of society, etc., I’m one who wants America to be made great again and proud of it.
Europe has been anti-American “woke” in public while holding their hand out for free aid for decades. They are not happy with our new sheriff in town that is publicly cracking down on their foul play towards us.
Yes, Americans ARE Brutal. That’s why the rest of the world calls upon us to do their dirty work. Like fight THEIR wars, clean up THEIR messes, fix THEIR problems.
We are not dainty about it. We go in, fight like hell and get the job done. We hold the line. We WIN. Well, at least in the past. Now the NWO wants us to be gentle in war. OK, we can do tht too. But, war IS BRUTAL. And it;s not the USA killing off Russians and Ukrainians. It’s not the USA killing off Israelies and Palestinians. It’s not the USA in wars.
Now the PM of the CONGO wants the USA to come in and “help” with the rebel fighters, to bring peace, with the promise of minerals and riches. THE SAME minerals and riches they have already given to CHINA. So do they really think we will go to war with China to save the.m?
See, this is how the rest of the World thinks. They get in a bind, need USA money, treasure and boots on the ground, but expect the USA to come in and fix their problems.
I could give a Crap what Europe or the rest of the World thinks of Americans. We simply do not want to be the “Fixer of Wars” We, instead will stand first in line for PEACE. If we cannot deliver peace, then we simply need to walk away and let other countries settler their own disputes without the financial and milttary of the USA
