Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said he would resign to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham last night on the off chance Democrats and the Republican establishment join forces to elect a moderate Republican speaker of the House.
With 222 Republicans in the House, McCarthy went in to the first vote for speaker on Tuesday, knowing he could only afford to lose four of them. By the 11th ballot Thursday, McCarthy only received 200 votes — 18 short of the number he needs to wield the speaker’s gavel.
Per Mediaite:
INGRAHAM: Are you going to be OK, Congressman, will you be OK then if there’s ultimately a deal struck with moderate Democrats if Democrats kind of co-control committees? You’re fine with that?
GAETZ: No, absolutely not. That will not happen. There are two scenarios here —
INGRAHAM: Well, that’s what happened.
GAETZ: No, listen. I’m on the floor, Laura. These 212 Democrats are going to vote for Hakeem Jeffries every single time. He is a historic candidate for them. They are not going to cleave off under any circumstance. I assure you if Democrats join up to elect a moderate Republican, I will resign from the House of Representatives. That is how certain I am. I can assure your viewers that won’t happen.
Three days of voting make this the most prolonged battle for House speaker since 1860, which took 44 rounds of voting to resolve.
Gaetz, the most outspoken member of the “Never Kevin” faction, voted for former President Donald Trump for speaker of the House on two separate ballots Thursday.
On the fifth ballot of the day, Gaetz formally nominated Trump, who is encouraging Republican holdouts to support McCarthy and “take the victory.”
Gaetz did indicate to Ingraham that he might support Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., for speaker provided he agrees to the House Freedom Caucus’ demands.

Try actually listening to what he said. He stated that there was no way the Democrats would support anyone other than the Democrat they where already supporting. As an indication of how sure he was, he said he would resign if they did. It is like someone saying if X happens, they will eat their shorts.
McCarthy has exhausted the number of concessions he had surrendered to the ‘rebels’. What more does the egomaniacal Gaetz want ? Does he hate McCarthy more than he loves America ?

McCarthy has proven NOT to be a quitter….he has gained my respect in having a willingness to attempt to negotiate and make concessions. However when you have children who will throw themselves on the floor and refuse to do anything unless they get their way the adults have to save them and the country from this insanity!! Watch the video. He stated he was so sure that the Democrats would not vote for ANY Republican that if they did, he would resign. I sounded like when someone says that if X happens, they will eat their shorts. The context makes it BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS they are 100% certain X won’t happen.
This is a knee-jerk reaction and makes Matt Gaetz appear petty and childish. Why were you elected? So you could throw a tantrum and pick up your marbles and go home? Do what you were elected to do.
