Report: CNN to Axe This Primetime Program After Midterms

-

Sorry, Jake but this isn't going to work out.

's Jake Tapper will be moving back to his regular 4 p.m. show after a brief test in a primetime hour-long slot.

In what was originally billed as a trial period but was widely seen as a test to insiders, Tapper briefly took over the 9 p.m. time slot starting in September as a temporary host ahead of the November elections. However, CNN is opting not to take the bait and is sending the TV personality back to his regular show after a lackluster performance.

A CNN spokesperson told Semafor, “As part of a special lineup, Jake agreed to anchor the 9p hour through the midterm elections. At the completion of that schedule, he'll be returning to his award-winning program The Lead. We will announce post-election plans for that time slot in the coming days.”

Those close to the situation believed that the prominent journalist was being slated for a starring evening role with the network, permanently taking up the spot held by Chris Cuomo, who was fired from the network last year. (RELATED: Chris Cuomo Accused of Sex Attack Before Firing)

While Tapper was able to schedule an interview with President during his short-lived run in primetime, he simply wasn't able to pull in competitive ratings as other TV personalities like dominated the hour.

According to data, even with Tapper's exclusive interview with President Biden CNN's ratings still trailed behind Fox News and MSNBC.

Fox News's “Hannity” won first place with 2.63 million total viewers and MSNBC's “Alex Wagner Tonight” took second place with 1.59 million total viewers, good enough to triple and double CNN's turnout of only 854,000 total viewers.

New CNN CEO Chris Licht has made waves within the network since taking over and has made it clear the changes won't be stopping anytime soon.

Over the past months, Licht has implemented some major changes such as firing “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter and demoting former primetime host Don Lemon to co-hosting a new morning show.
