Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have launched an investigation into whether organized efforts are shaping bias in Wikipedia articles—and how the platform’s leadership is responding.
Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who chairs the subcommittee on cybersecurity, information technology, and government innovation, sent a letter Wednesday to Maryana Iskander, the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia.
The lawmakers said the probe is part of a broader inquiry into “foreign operations and individuals at academic institutions subsidized by U.S. taxpayer dollars to influence U.S. public opinion.” They are requesting documents and communications about Wikipedia volunteer editors accused of breaking site policies, as well as information on how the Foundation responds to coordinated attempts to sway content on politically sensitive topics.
“Multiple studies and reports have highlighted efforts to manipulate information on the Wikipedia platform for propaganda aimed at Western audiences,” Comer and Mace wrote.
They cited an Anti-Defamation League report that uncovered an anti-Israel campaign manipulating content on the platform, as well as an Atlantic Council study showing pro-Russia actors using Wikipedia to spread Kremlin-friendly narratives and undermine Ukraine. Such content, they noted, can also shape the training data used in AI chatbots.
The letter stresses the committee’s focus on accountability: “Our inquiry seeks information to help our examination of how Wikipedia responds to such threats and how frequently it creates accountability when intentional, egregious, or highly suspicious patterns of conduct on topics of sensitive public interest are brought to attention.”
Republicans are asking for details on the tools and methods Wikipedia uses to detect and prevent politically motivated editing, including any evidence of state-backed efforts, accounts flagged for misconduct, and internal analyses of data manipulation.
A spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation confirmed the request and said the organization is reviewing it:
“We welcome the opportunity to respond to the Committee’s questions and to discuss the importance of safeguarding the integrity of information on our platform.”
Concerns about Wikipedia’s political leanings are not new. In 2024, the right-leaning Manhattan Institute released a report finding that Wikipedia entries often attached more negative sentiment to conservative-leaning terms.

So can we trust this inquiry to be totally impartial or simply a way to twist the arm of media sites to the left? I’ve never felt Wikipedia to be as biased as Fox media, but then maybe you think they’re left leaning if they don’t use Fox media or Conservative think tanks as an information source, eh?
