The country entered Thanksgiving under a heavy shadow as President Donald J. Trump confirmed the death of one of the National Guardsmen ambushed just blocks from the White House—a targeted attack that is rapidly reshaping the national conversation around security, immigration, and the rule of law.

In remarks delivered Thursday, the president announced that 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom had succumbed to her injuries.

“She’s just passed away,” Trump said. “A magnificent person…outstanding in every way… She was savagely attacked. She’s no longer with us.”

Beckstrom had been sworn into service less than 24 hours before the shooting.

Her fellow Guardsman, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition.

A Targeted Act of Terror Near the White House

Federal prosecutors say the attack was no random act of violence. According to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeannine Pirro, the alleged gunman—29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a migrant from Afghanistan admitted under Biden’s 2021 Operation Allies Welcome—drove across the country with the intent to reach the nation’s capital.

Armed with a .357 revolver, he allegedly opened fire on the two uniformed Guardsmen near the Farragut West Metro station, sending the White House into lockdown and unleashing a massive federal response.

Pirro characterized the shooting as “targeted.”

Death-Penalty Case Moves Forward

In back-to-back statements, Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed the Justice Department will seek the death penalty.

“We will do everything in our power to seek the death penalty against that monster who should not have been in our country,” Bondi said.

Federal charges will escalate to first-degree murder now that Beckstrom has died.

Beckstrom’s father told the New York Times before her passing that she had “a mortal wound” and was unlikely to recover. His heartbreak now becomes part of a growing national reckoning.

Trump Responds With a Sweeping Immigration Pledge

Hours after announcing Beckstrom’s death, President Trump took to Truth Social with a forceful Thanksgiving message outlining what he called a “reverse migration” plan.

The president pledged:

  • A permanent halt to immigration from what he described as “Third World Countries.”
  • Revocation of what he said were “millions” of Biden-era admissions.
  • Removal of individuals labeled security risks, public charges, or “non-compatible with Western Civilization.”
  • Ending all federal benefits for noncitizens.
  • Expanded deportations and possible denaturalization of migrants who threaten domestic order.

Trump said the immigration system must “fully recover” from years of overwhelming strain.

The post concluded with a stark warning:

“HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL, except those that hate, steal, murder, and destroy everything that America stands for — You won’t be here for long!”

Trump called the killing a crime against our entire nation and a crime against humanity.

Wolfe continues to fight for his life.

As the investigation deepens and federal prosecutors prepare a capital case, the White House braces for a national debate that is no longer hypothetical—one driven by tragedy, fueled by outrage, and unfolding in the heart of the capital itself.
