Good morning. The day’s headlines span security concerns at home, shifting diplomatic winds in the Caribbean, and new developments in the escalating confrontation with Iran.

ISIS-Inspired Bomb Plot Charged Near NYC Mayor’s Residence

Federal prosecutors say two men attempted to carry out a terror attack during dueling protests near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Authorities charged Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi in connection with what investigators described as a broader ISIS-inspired plot. The pair allegedly attempted to detonate explosive devices Saturday during a protest titled “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City,” which had drawn counterprotesters under the banner “Run Nazis Out of New York City.”

According to a federal criminal complaint, Balat allegedly threw one explosive device toward demonstrators and a second near officers with the New York Police Department. Authorities say the suspects later made statements referencing allegiance to the terrorist group Islamic State.

Investigators also said Balat told authorities the attack was intended to be “bigger than” the Boston Marathon bombing.

The suspects now face multiple federal charges, including attempted material support for a terrorist organization and use of a weapon of mass destruction. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the indictments, saying law enforcement would remain vigilant against extremist threats.

Mayor Mamdani condemned the attack attempt, calling it a “heinous act of terrorism” and vowing that those responsible would be held fully accountable, though he was criticized for his initial statement, which implied a “white supremacist” protester was responsible for the terrorism although it was known at the time that the suspects were Islamic fundamentalists.

Trump Administration Weighs Potential Economic Deal With Cuba

The Trump administration is reportedly exploring a new economic agreement with Cuba that could mark a dramatic shift in the long-strained relationship between Washington and Havana.

According to sources cited by USA Today, officials are discussing measures that could ease travel restrictions for Americans visiting the island and expand cooperation in sectors such as ports, tourism and energy development. Some Americab sanctions could also be relaxed as part of the arrangement.

President Donald Trump hinted that negotiations are underway while speaking at the Shield of the Americas Summit in Florida, saying Cuba’s worsening economic crisis has made its leadership more open to compromise.

“They want to make a deal so badly,” Trump said, adding that he believes an agreement could come together quickly.

The talks come amid major upheaval in the region following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and the halt of Venezuelan oil shipments that had long helped sustain the Cuban economy.

One scenario reportedly under discussion would allow Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and members of the Castro family to remain on the island while the country moves toward closer economic ties with the United States.

If finalized, the deal would represent another turn in a relationship shaped by more than six decades of embargo and fluctuating diplomacy. Efforts by Barack Obama to normalize relations in 2014 expanded travel and trade, though many of those changes were later rolled back during Trump’s first term.

Graham Urges Israel to Spare Iran’s Oil Infrastructure

As tensions continue to rise following the launch of Operation Epic Fury, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is urging caution when it comes to one critical target: Iran’s oil industry.

In a message posted on social media Monday, Graham praised Israel’s military capabilities but warned against striking the country’s oil infrastructure. According to the senator, preserving Iran’s energy sector could be crucial if the current government collapses and the Iranian people attempt to rebuild.

“Our goal is to liberate the Iranian people in a fashion that does not cripple their chance to start a new and better life,” Graham wrote, adding that the country’s oil economy would be essential to that effort.

The warning comes as Iran retaliated against the operation by launching hundreds of missiles and drones toward targets across the region, including Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The conflict has also rattled global energy markets. Oil prices surged following the start of the strikes, with benchmark crude jumping from roughly $70 per barrel to as high as $120 in overnight trading before settling closer to $100.

Meanwhile, maritime traffic has been disrupted through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, where tanker traffic slowed after Iran’s missile attacks.

Graham’s comments come amid criticism from some colleagues who view the senator as one of Washington’s most hawkish voices on foreign policy. Still, his latest message suggests at least one potential limit on how far the conflict with Tehran should go.
