Minneapolis became the center of a fast-moving national controversy this weekend after a fatal shooting involving a federal agent spiraled into protests, political fallout, and online backlash. What began as a targeted enforcement operation quickly escalated into violence on the streets, condemnations from elected leaders, and scrutiny of how tragedy is being used in the political arena.
A Fatal Federal Shooting Sparks Chaos in Minneapolis
Minneapolis awoke Saturday to another deadly confrontation involving federal law enforcement, the second in just over two weeks. A U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot a 37-year-old man during what the Department of Homeland Security described as a targeted operation, setting off protests, political backlash, and a rapidly escalating scene downtown.
According to DHS, agents were carrying out an operation related to an illegal immigrant wanted for violent assault when the man—later identified as Alex Pretti, a Minneapolis resident and ICU nurse at the VA hospital—approached Border Patrol officers with a 9mm handgun and two magazines. DHS officials said officers attempted to disarm him, but he resisted, prompting an agent to fire defensive shots.
Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene despite immediate medical aid. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the suspect had no identification and warned the circumstances suggested an intent to inflict “maximum damage” on law enforcement.
The shooting came just 17 days after an ICE agent killed a woman who struck the agent with her vehicle—also in Minneapolis—further heightening tensions around federal immigration enforcement in the city.
By midday, roughly 200 protesters and rioters had converged on the scene, according to DHS, obstructing officers and triggering crowd-control measures.
Political Leaders Clash as Protests Turn Violent
The response from Minnesota’s Democratic leadership was swift and furious. Gov. Tim Walz called the shooting “sickening” and demanded the White House immediately end federal enforcement operations in the state. Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose district includes Minneapolis, labeled the incident “another murder by immigration enforcement” and called for ICE and Customs and Border Protection to leave Minnesota entirely.
Federal officials and Border Patrol leadership disputed their framing forcefully. The National Border Patrol Council defended the agent’s actions, arguing that armed confrontations are an inevitable risk when officers are portrayed as aggressors and warning that rhetoric from politicians and media outlets has fueled dangerous encounters.
As protests intensified, violence spilled over. DHS confirmed that during the unrest, rioters attacked federal officers. A Homeland Security Investigations officer had part of his finger bitten off during an assault, and a Customs and Border Protection agent was also injured in a separate attack. Photos of the injuries were later posted by DHS officials, underscoring how rapidly the scene deteriorated.
The clashes unfolded against a broader backdrop of aggressive immigration enforcement in Minnesota, where federal authorities have deployed hundreds of agents following revelations of large-scale welfare fraud tied to Somali networks. Local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have reiterated that city police will not cooperate with federal immigration operations.
A Fundraising Backlash and a Scrubbed Website
As tensions mounted, a separate controversy erupted online. A Democratic-aligned political action committee, Democratic Youth Wave, appeared to exploit Pretti’s death in a fundraising text message sent just hours after the shooting. Screenshots circulating on social media showed a message invoking Pretti’s name and urging recipients to donate $50, with a matching incentive, while calling on Gov. Walz to “END THE OPERATION.”
The donation link led to a page hosted on ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising platform. Within hours of the screenshots going viral, the fundraising page stopped accepting donations. The PAC’s website was later taken offline entirely, eventually displaying an error page.
ActBlue said it contacted the PAC immediately after learning of the message and confirmed the campaign was shut down, with refunds issued to any donors. The platform acknowledged growing concerns about “exploitative practices” and said it is exploring ways to prevent similar incidents.
Democratic Youth Wave, which previously spent nearly $200,000 supporting Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential bid, has not publicly explained how or why the message was sent. By Sunday, its online presence had largely vanished, leaving unanswered questions about accountability amid an already volatile political moment.
