Good morning.

President Donald Trump capped America’s 250th birthday celebration with a speech on American exceptionalism, the U.S. Men’s National Team received a major boost ahead of its World Cup knockout match, and a Fourth of July celebration in South Carolina descended into chaos after officers responding to reports of gunfire were attacked by a crowd.

Trump Celebrates America’s 250th Birthday With Patriotic Address

President Donald Trump delivered a nearly 40-minute keynote address Saturday night on the National Mall, declaring America “the crowning achievement of human history” as the nation celebrated its 250th birthday.

Speaking after severe weather temporarily interrupted the festivities, Trump praised the resilience of the crowd that returned to hear his remarks, telling attendees that neither he nor the audience would be deterred by the storm.

Throughout the speech, Trump repeatedly emphasized American exceptionalism, calling the United States “the home of freedom” and “the land of liberty” while proclaiming that no nation has “done more good, shown more courage, made more progress, righted more injustice, or achieved more greatness.”

He also highlighted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, calling the latter “the most righteous political document ever conceived,” and praised constitutional protections including the First, Second, and Fourteenth Amendments.

Trump honored several American heroes during the celebration, including Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. William Carney, who famously refused to let the American flag touch the ground despite being wounded in battle, and Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient Col. Paris Davis, who joined the president on stage.

The evening also featured appearances from World War II veterans and veterans of more recent conflicts, who helped present several historic American flags.

Closing his remarks, Trump returned to the themes that framed the speech from the outset.

“We have thrived and flourished because our founders were great, our cause was just, our people are brave, our culture is exceptional, and our destiny is written by God,” he said.

Despite weather forcing an evacuation earlier in the evening, Trump estimated roughly 150,000 people returned to the National Mall for the late-night address after attendance earlier in the day had reached approximately 375,000.

FIFA Reinstates Balogun Ahead of World Cup Knockout Match

The U.S. Men’s National Team received a significant boost Sunday after FIFA overturned the controversial red card issued to star striker Folarin Balogun, making him eligible to play in Monday night’s Round of 16 match against Belgium.

Balogun had been sent off late in the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after officials upgraded what initially drew no card into a straight red following a lengthy VAR review. The Arsenal forward scored the opening goal in the victory.

Under FIFA rules, a red card normally results in an automatic suspension for the following match, creating widespread concern that the United States would be without one of its top attacking players during the knockout stage.

Instead, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reversed course under provisions allowing sanctions to be suspended. Balogun will remain on probation for one year, with the governing body warning that any similar infraction during that period could result in the original punishment being reinstated alongside any additional discipline.

Fourth of July Celebration Turns Violent as Officers Attacked

A Fourth of July celebration in North Charleston, South Carolina, erupted into violence after police responding to reports of gunfire and fireworks being launched at passing vehicles were assaulted by a crowd that included numerous teenagers.

According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers initially responded to help disperse the gathering after conditions deteriorated despite the event having been permitted earlier in the day.

Authorities said reports of fights, gunfire, and fireworks aimed at vehicles prompted officers to intervene. As they attempted to break up the disturbances, several officers were attacked.

Video released by local media shows one officer being knocked to the ground before multiple individuals allegedly punched and struck the officer. A second officer attempting to assist was also surrounded, eventually deploying a Taser to disperse the crowd.

Police said four people—three juveniles and one adult—were arrested.

Investigators also recovered four firearms, including two automatic weapons, along with multiple magazines and what authorities described as a homemade spear.

North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho called the incident one of the most troubling of his career and appealed for greater community involvement.

“We need some help,” Camacho said during a press conference. “We really do. We need some help from the community. Because stuff like this is getting dangerous.”

Officials indicated the investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests could follow.
