Good morning.
After days of military escalation in the Persian Gulf, President Trump abruptly pulled back from planned strikes on Iran and signaled that a diplomatic breakthrough may be within reach. Federal authorities announced terrorism charges against three Americans accused of supporting ISIS, and the White House is reportedly considering an extraordinary proposal to secure one of America’s most important overseas military bases.
Trump Halts Iran Strikes as Ceasefire Talks Advance
Just hours after warning that the United States would hit Iran “VERY HARD TONIGHT,” President Trump reversed course Thursday and announced that military strikes had been canceled as negotiations moved closer to a potential agreement.
The sudden de-escalation follows a volatile week that began when Iran allegedly shot down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. The incident triggered a series of military exchanges, including American strikes on Iranian infrastructure and retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Tehran.
According to reports, negotiators have reached a broad political understanding and are now working through the final details of a possible interim agreement. Major sticking points include the release of frozen Iranian assets, sanctions relief, maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz, and guarantees surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
Despite the diplomatic progress, the situation remains fragile. Trump said the American naval blockade of Iranian ports will remain in place until a final agreement is signed, while Iranian state media cautioned against assuming a deal is complete.
For now, a conflict that appeared headed toward major escalation has instead moved back to the negotiating table.
Three Americans Charged in Alleged ISIS Support Scheme
Federal authorities have arrested three American citizens accused of conspiring to support ISIS and finance attacks against American service members overseas.
According to the Justice Department, Bisaam Ghafoor of Kansas, Elias Shamsaldeen of California, and Bereen Dzayee of California allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS, communicated through encrypted platforms, and sent money they believed would be used to purchase drones, rocket-propelled grenades, and other equipment for attacks targeting American troops.
Investigators say the men discussed violence against Americans and military personnel over the course of a year-long FBI counterterrorism investigation. Authorities ultimately used a confidential source posing as an ISIS operative to gather evidence.
Prosecutors allege the defendants collectively sent cash and cryptocurrency payments intended to support the terrorist organization. All three have been charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Federal officials say the case highlights the continuing threat posed by online radicalization, even years after ISIS lost control of its territorial caliphate.
White House Weighs Buying Strategic Island Chain
The Trump administration is reportedly exploring whether the United States should purchase the Chagos Islands in order to secure long-term control of Diego Garcia, one of America’s most important military installations.
According to reports, the proposal emerged during discussions over the future of the Indian Ocean archipelago, which is currently at the center of a sovereignty dispute involving Britain and Mauritius.
Diego Garcia serves as a critical hub for American military operations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The base has played key roles in conflicts ranging from the Gulf War to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and remains central to United States strategy as tensions with Iran and China continue to grow.
The idea gained traction after President Trump opposed a British-backed agreement that would transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius while preserving a long-term lease for military operations. Trump has criticized the arrangement and reportedly views direct American control as one possible solution.
No purchase price has been discussed, and administration officials have not endorsed the plan publicly.
