During a Dearborn City Council meeting, Christian resident Ted Barham raised objections to street signs honoring Arab American News publisher Osama Siblani, citing Siblani’s past praise for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.
Mayor Abdullah Hammoud — the city’s first Arab American and Muslim mayor — erupted in fury.
“You are a bigot, a racist, and an Islamophobe,” Hammoud told Barham from the podium. “Although you live here, I want you to know as mayor, you are not welcome here.”
He went on to say he would host a parade the day Barham moves out of Dearborn.
The moment was caught on video and instantly went viral. Critics accused Hammoud of anti-Christian bigotry and weaponizing identity politics to silence dissent. Supporters insisted he was defending his community from what they saw as a smear.
