Congress is stepping in after the local prosecutor for a suburban D.C.-area Democrat stronghold has stonewalled efforts to investigate violent threats against a top Trump official and his family.
U.S. House Judiciary Committee announced in a statement that Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) “subpoenaed documents and information from Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, prosecutor for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church, regarding her office ignoring threats to White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller and his family.”
In the 2024 election in Virginia, Trump got just 19.5 percent of the vote in Arlington County and just 17.9 percent in Falls Church.
The committee reports that “according to investigators involved in the case, Dehghani-Tafti has been ‘stymying the investigation’ into the threats made against the Miller family. Miller and his young family have faced threats and harassment from left-wing agitators outside their former residence in Arlington. When federal authorities sought to investigate the matter, Deghani-Tafti made an “unusual” move to intercede in the case on behalf of the left-wing agitator.”
“The Miller family’s safety is especially important in light of recent left-wing political violence against prominent Republicans, and the election of an attorney general in Virginia who has fantasized about murdering the children of his political opponents. The Committee is conducting oversight to determine whether changes are necessary to federal law to better protect federal officials from harassment and threats,” the committee reports.
Jordan’s letter read, in part:
The Committee is in receipt of your letter dated January 27, 2026, refusing to cooperate with oversight requests related to concerns about your politically-motivated actions in a case involving a far-left agitator’s disturbing campaign to threaten, harass, and dox a senior White House official and his family. You continue to object to the Committee’s requests on the grounds that disclosing the requested material would interfere with an ongoing criminal investigation and that the Committee, in your view, does not have a sufficient federal interest in obtaining the requested material. Neither argument is persuasive and the Committee does not accept your stated reasons for withholding information. Accordingly, because of your continued noncompliance, compulsory process is necessary…
… The Supreme Court has recognized that Congress has a “broad and indispensable” power to conduct oversight, which “encompasses inquiries into the administration of existing laws, studies of proposed laws, and surveys in our social, economic or political system for the purpose of enabling Congress to remedy them.” Pursuant to the Rules of the House of Representatives, the Committee on the Judiciary is authorized to conduct oversight of criminal justice matters and judicial proceedings.
Accordingly, the Committee is initiating compulsory process to obtain the documents and material needed to fulfill its oversight and legislative obligations. Please find the enclosed subpoena compelling production of the requested documents by April 7, 2026.
