Rep. Byron Donalds didn’t flinch when an angry white liberal woman tried to corner him at a protest while holding a sign labeling him a “fascist” all while profanely excoriating his stance against certain transgender health care procedures, like sex change operations and hormonal treatments for minors.
Donalds, a Florida Republican, hailing from the Sunshine State’s ruby red Gulf Coast, has a history of supporting conservative policies, including defending gun rights, advocating for a border wall and opposing abortion.
As the woman continued to swear and point her finger at Congressman Donalds, who recently announced his candidacy for Florida governor, he remained composed—though his demeanor slightly changed after she called him a “race traitor.”
Obviously, Donalds wasn’t having it. His response? Calm, cool and classic Donalds—with a dash of sass previously unseen in the exchange:
“I’m gonna be your governor. Trust me.”
The moment, caught on video, quickly went viral.

Other Potential Candidates:
As of now, Byron Donalds is the only candidate who has officially declared his intention to run for Florida governor in 2026. However, other potential candidates have been mentioned:
Casey DeSantis: Florida’s first lady has been speculated as a possible contender, with Governor Ron DeSantis hinting at her potential candidacy.
Matt Gaetz: The former U.S. representative has expressed interest in the gubernatorial race, indicating he is considering a run.
Wilton Simpson: The state’s agriculture commissioner has been mentioned as a potential candidate but has not made any official announcements.
Preliminary Polling:
A Victory Insights poll from January 2025 showed Donalds leading with 31% support among likely Republican primary voters. Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez garnered 4%, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson received 3% and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez had 1%
An internal poll conducted one month later by Fabrizio Lee & Associates indicated that Donalds’ support increased significantly when voters were informed of Trump’s endorsement.
Donalds, a strong supporter of Trump, has frequently faced criticism from the left for his conservative positions. Despite the heated opposition during the congressman’s latest exchange, he remained composed, a valuable soft skill that will no doubt serve him well as his political star continues to rise.
