Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) did not rule out a future presidential run when asked about swirling 2028 rumors sparked by a viral campaign-style video posted by her team last week.
She avoided answering the question, saying, “I think what people should be most concerned about is the fact that Republicans are trying to cut Medicaid right now, and people’s healthcare is in danger. This moment isn’t about campaigns, or elections, or about politics. It’s about making sure people are protected.”
But while the progressive firebrand remained noncommittal, many believe the groundwork for a 2028 bid may already be underway. Her recent national “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), coupled with a professionally produced video proclaiming “We are one,” has ignited speculation that Ocasio-Cortez is positioning herself as the face of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
“I’m a girl from the Bronx,” she says in the video, addressing a crowd in deep-red Idaho. “To be welcomed here in this state, all of us together, seeing our common cause — this is what this country is all about.”
Prominent pollster and FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver recently identified Ocasio-Cortez as the most likely 2028 Democratic nominee in an early prediction draft, citing her grassroots popularity and appeal across the party base.
That appeal is reflected in fundraising numbers: the four-term congresswoman raked in a staggering $9.6 million over the last quarter — one of the largest hauls for any House member in U.S. history — with over 266,000 individual donors contributing an average of just $21.
Political insiders note the timing is significant. The Democratic Party remains fractured in the wake of Republicans’ sweeping victories in the 2024 election, including President Donald Trump’s return to the White House and Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat at the hands of the former president. A recent Siena College poll found Ocasio-Cortez’s favorability among New York voters had climbed to 47%, outpacing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, whose favorability dropped to 39% amid criticism for supporting a Republican-backed budget bill.
Democratic strategist Joe Caiazzo, a veteran of Sanders’ campaigns, said AOC is one of a small group of Democrats testing the waters for 2028. “One of the pathways there is to drill down on economic populism. There are many people that occupy that lane, and she is one of them,” he said.
However, not all Democrats are convinced. Some party moderates view her policy agenda — including the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and sweeping immigration reform — as a tough sell to swing-state voters. Still, GOP strategist Colin Reed warns Democrats not to underestimate her. “She shouldn’t be discounted by Democrats standing in her way,” Reed said. “She’s a political force.”
Yet Reed also questioned the long-term viability of her candidacy, calling her platform “far outside the mainstream” and warning of the optics around the tour’s carbon footprint.
“Ultimately, in a Democratic base, there’s always going to be a percentage of voters who are drawn to that message. The issue they run to is it’s just not the majority of Americans. The majority of Americans don’t want to transform our country into some sort of ‘European-style government rules all’ vision. That’s why America was founded in the first place — to get away from oppression, from an overbearing, overreaching government,” Reed said.
He continued, “The house of cards will come crumbling down, especially when you’ve got two folks out there, Sen. Sanders and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez, holding themselves out as climate warriors as they jet around the country on private jets spewing untold carbon emissions into the air. That hypocrisy is one that’s tough for a lot of folks’ stomachs.”
As the Democratic Party grapples with leadership uncertainty and ideological divides, observers say Ocasio-Cortez’s continued rise suggests she is seizing a rare political moment. With party leadership in flux and no clear front-runner in sight, some say she’s uniquely positioned to fill the vacuum.

AOC, this dunce wants to be president? Never should she be in charge. If the nation elects anymore stupid people then we deserve to lose control of the nation! Right now we have a smart person running things, fixing the drains where the citizen’s taxes were being stolen away, and managing the relations with nations to even out the tariffs with all of the nations. Ending the free rides of nations and of illegal aliens. Fighting to close our open borders to free loaders and ship them home. Of course the courts are resisting and it seems at least one SC judge thinks the highest court needs to keep them all here.
Big business and the DNC want them here and tried for decades to amnesty all who come here illegally. The DNC needs a voting platform and Big Business wants cheap labor and that has been clear since 1970s. And at least one judge now who obviously does not like Trump because his SC ego is out of control is helping unbalance the division of powers. What I want to know is since when do illegal aliens in this country have citizen’s rights? Why do they all deserve trials after they cross the border illegally?
There is no excuse for this unbalancing of the division of powers. Biden let them in against the law and no one stopped it. So why can’t the president we elected to remove them do it as he finds them? This lying, cheating, stealing in this nation must stop because I am positive more than half the nation is ready to kick them out and voted Trump in for that particular process to happen.
The SC has to do it’s job and stay out of politics or congress must pass laws to stop this. We must win more members in congress to support that sort of bill. Any representatives and senators positions must be won on the GOP side so we can continue to move forward and now to over turn the SC which is turning political and really needs a course correction. Are that many people in this country in high offices just plain corrupted or have such giant egos?
AOC is the prime example of what we DO NOT want in America. She is a vicious embittered/woke/terrorist-turned-congresswomen. And most of us hate her – her ideas – her being in America. Down with AOC.
Please don’t run for presidency – as you will lose beyond your imagination!!! And rightfully so.
