Pete Buttigieg has removed his pronouns from his social media bio on X, formerly Twitter, a move that coincides with growing speculation about his potential run for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2026.

Reports indicate that Buttigieg, who served as U.S. secretary of transportation from 2021 to 2025, is seriously considering a Senate bid following the announcement that Democratic Senator Gary Peters will not seek reelection.

The change to Buttigieg’s social media profile has drawn attention from political observers and media outlets, fueling discussion about whether the adjustment signals an effort to appeal to Michigan voters amid the Wolverine State’s shifting political landscape.

Newsweek reports:

Screenshots from the Libs of TikTok account, which is run by conservative activist Chaya Raichik and has over 4 million followers, appear to show that Buttigieg deleted his “he/him” pronouns from the account.

Newsweek has contacted Buttigieg for comment via Facebook and Instagram direct messages.

Michigan’s Political Shift

Once considered a Democratic stronghold, Michigan has become a battleground state in recent years. While Democrats currently hold both U.S. Senate seats—occupied by Elissa Slotkin and the outgoing Peters—the state’s political balance remains tight. Republicans hold a majority in the state House (58-52), while Democrats maintain a slim edge in the Senate (20-18).

President Donald Trump carried Michigan in both the 2016 and 2024 elections, underscoring the state’s rightward trend.

Following Donald Trump‘s second presidential election victory in November 2024, a number of organizations and prominent figures have rolled back on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives dubbed “woke” by critics.

Some commentators have argued that Kamala Harris lost the 2024 presidential election at least in part because she leaned too heavily towards progressive social campaigns, such as those around transgender rights.

As Buttigieg weighs his next political move, his apparent social media update is the latest in a series of signals watched closely by those tracking Michigan’s upcoming Senate race.

Don’t vote him in Michigan, don’t give in to his lies. He will promise you everything you want but will never deliver it. Get him out of our government by not voting him into a senate seat. Instead chose someone who truly has your best interests at heart and will stand by you and vote as you would have your senator vote. Be careful of those who betrayed you and are not trying to promise they have changed their ways… why risk more of the same insanity by putting in one who helped cause it in the first place.
