Dem in Senior Leadership Role Facing Defeat?

-

Congressman and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chairman is in serious trouble.

Is being the DCCC chair a death knell to one's political career? That appears to be more of a reality these days, at least according to The Cook Political Report.

Axios further reports:

Dave WassermanU.S. House editor of The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, this morning moved the reelection race of ' campaign kingmaker — DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney of — to a tossup.

Although the exurban New York City district backed by 10 points in 2020, even Maloney's camp admits the race has tightened, another sign of a growing red wave, Axios' Josh Kraushaar adds:

Why it matters: It's a sign of how big the GOP wave is looking — and how potent the issue of is in New York — that Republicans have a shot at unseating the powerful lawmaker in a double-digit Biden district.

Prognosticators initially dismissed Republican-affiliated ad-buys in the district as trolling, but a confluence of factors, including gubernatorial candidate 's remarkably strong showing in the Hudson Valley, have Maloney fighting for his political life.

The Hill further notes:

The race ratings chance comes two weeks from the November midterms. Democrats are facing several headwinds this cycle given the historical precedent that the president's party generally suffers losses during the midterm elections. Democrats are trying to limit the number of losses in the House and a loss in Maloney's race would be awkward for their campaign chair.

“Look, I'm a gay guy with an interracial family in a Trump district; I didn't win this seat five times by not worrying about it,” Maloney said in an interview with Times Union that was published on Sunday. “You have to do your work. You have to go out and make your case.”

Maloney's predecessor declined to run for reelection. The race to represent her old seat may be going just as poorly.

Congresswoman of Illinois' 17th District and the DCCC chair from the 2020 election stepped down from the campaign committee roll after the last cycle's disappointing congressional results and announced her imminent retirement from last April — being one of the first Democrats to do so in a year when over 30 have abandoned ship.

Bustos might have wanted to avoid a rematch with Esther Joy King in IL-17 after she barely emerged victorious last time.

Bustos' Democratic replacement, Eric Sorenson, finds himself in an ultra-competitive election with Esther Joy King in the Western Illinois district. (RELATED: Top Democrat House Candidate Promoted Pornographic Book to Kids)

The of Illinois 17th District (Moline, Rock Island) are closer to that of Des Moines than Chicago. Joy King's background of being a JAG officer is also serving her well in connecting with voters in a region that has a substantial military presence, being home to the U.S. Army's Rock Island Arsenal and major VA facilities.
