Democratic strategists are in full-blown panic mode as President Donald Trump settles into his second term, with some insiders admitting they see no clear path forward — short of an economic collapse that might give the party a political opening.
In a stark report published Monday by The Hill, multiple Democratic operatives painted a grim picture of the party’s current standing. From weak leadership and fractured messaging to persistently low approval ratings, party insiders say the Democrats are adrift — and running out of time.
“This is a nightmare scenario for the Dems right now,” one anonymous strategist confessed. “We better pray long and hard that the country is going to be in a f—ing depression, because I don’t know how else we find ourselves out of this mess.”
Democratic strategist Rodell Mollineau told The Hill that the party is effectively lost in the political wilderness following devastating losses in the 2024 election cycle — including Trump’s White House win and Democratic failures down-ballot.
“It’s hard to message when you’re in the wilderness, which is what we are right now,” Mollineau said. “When voters don’t think that you care about their issues, and they don’t think that you’re going to fight for them, that becomes a problem.”
Another prominent strategist, Brad Bannon, said that the Democratic Party has failed to gain any ground since Trump’s inauguration in January 2025.
“Sadly, Democrats are still stuck in the same mud that they were in six months ago. We are still as unpopular as we were when Trump was inaugurated,” Bannon said.
Those concerns are backed by a slate of recent polling data. A Marist/NPR/PBS NewsHour poll released July 1 found that only 27% of Americans approve of how congressional Democrats are performing — an all-time low for the party. Meanwhile, a survey from the Democratic super PAC Unite the Country showed that many voters now view Democrats as “out of touch,” “weak,” and “woke.”
The vacuum in national leadership has only added to the party’s problems. More than six months after the 2024 election, Democrats have yet to rally around a figure who can compete with Trump’s gravitational pull. Some within the party have rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris, while others have pushed for a generational shift — but no clear contender has emerged.
Frustrations inside the Democratic tent have also turned inward, with some strategists blaming the party’s obsession with Trump himself rather than addressing the needs of voters.
“It’s just ‘Trump sucks,’” billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban said on a recent episode of Pod Save America. “That’s the underlying thought of everything the Democrats do. That’s not the way to win. It’s not about Trump — it’s about the people of the United States of America.”
Despite the despair, some Democrats believe there’s still a narrow path to regaining momentum — by going on the offensive against Trump’s economic and immigration policies. Bannon argued that the party should focus on Medicaid cuts, mass deportations, and high tariffs under Trump’s new administration.
“Because of MAGA missteps, Democrats now finally have tools to use to build a new foundation,” Bannon said. “The secret sauce for the opposition is to use the Medicaid cuts, immigration deportations, and high tariff taxes to blister Trump for his failure to keep his campaign promise to bring down high prices on the first day of the second administration.”
Some observers are questioning the wisdom of this strategy. Public polling consistently shows Trump with some of his strongest approval numbers on immigration, with a majority of voters in every major poll supporting the deportation of all illegal immigrants. Additionally, the once-controversial tariffs that Democrats warned would tank the economy appear to have yielded favorable results for key domestic industries — a fact that has undercut earlier criticisms. Attacking Trump on policies where he is perceived to be successful risks backfiring and reinforcing his image as a decisive leader.
If nothing changes soon, the 2026 midterms may not be a comeback opportunity — but another chapter in what one strategist bluntly called “a nightmare.”

What Medicare cuts?
While you’re at it, pray for another massive natural disaster. A convenient hurricane or wildfire or flood would be handy for the Dems. Just something, anything, which hurts the country.
One thing is for sure,Democrats are the most evil people and especially those in power and their donors.
It isn’t like the democRATs aren’t already trying to make capital out of natural disasters like the wild fires in kalypornia and more recently the floods in the Texas Hill Country. Talk about a morally bankrupt bunch SMDH.
BTW, did maizie maui ever bother doing ANYTHING for the folks who lost everything in that disaster?
