Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, is facing serious allegations of physical assault, according to a report by the Daily Mail. The report claims Emhoff assaulted his ex-girlfriend during an incident in 2012. It comes just days after MSNBC host Jen Psaki praised him for “reshaping masculinity.”
The alleged altercation took place in May 2012 at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Emhoff is accused of striking the woman so forcefully that she spun around, according to three sources who spoke with the Daily Mail. The sources claim Emhoff’s jealousy was triggered when his then-girlfriend was speaking with another man while waiting in a valet line:
One of her friends told DailyMail.com that the woman called him immediately after the incident, sobbing in her cab, and described the alleged assault.
DailyMail.com is not naming the woman, who is a successful New York attorney, but will refer to her by the pseudonym ‘Jane’.
A second friend said Jane, who had been dating Emhoff for three months, also told her about the alleged violence at the time.
When the Daily Mail contacted Jane, she declined to comment.
In addition to the assault allegations, the report suggests that Emhoff admitted to his ex-girlfriend that he impregnated the nanny who cared for his children. The same sources allege that Emhoff told Jane that the nanny accused him of causing her to have a miscarriage—a charge he denied.
Emhoff was previously dubbed by Democrats as a ‘wife guy’ and a ‘mensch’, a Yiddish term for an honorable, kind man. He has also spoken out in media interviews about being an ally to women and against toxic masculinity.
Emhoff and Harris were married in 2014. He has two children from a previous marriage, where he cheated on his wife, Kerstin. The nanny’s miscarriage and Emhoff’s alleged involvement in the incident have not been independently verified.
The allegations come at a sensitive time for the Harris campaign, with only 33 days left until Election Day.
