Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

Late Wednesday night, New York City Mayor Eric Adams found himself at the center of a federal corruption probe that has escalated to an indictment by a grand jury. In a prerecorded statement released ahead of the news, Adams vehemently defended his innocence, stating that he’s being unfairly targeted for standing his ground in protecting New York City’s citizens.

As a former NYPD officer turned moderate Democrat, Adams has had a tumultuous time in office. Not only has he clashed with the Biden-Harris administration over the handling of the migrant crisis that has overwhelmed city resources, but his political tenure has now taken an ominous turn. His indictment has already spurred a whirlwind of unverified allegations online (primarily on X, formerly known as Twitter), with speculation running rampant about the extent of the charges. However, as of now, the specific accusations remain sealed.

The Scope of the Investigation

The corruption probe, which has shaken New York’s political landscape, doesn’t begin or end with Adams. In fact, it has already claimed other high-profile figures in his administration. NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban resigned just weeks ago after being implicated in the same investigation, which is being spearheaded by the Southern District of New York – a district known for its relentless pursuit of government corruption cases.

Adding to the chaos, the FBI executed search warrants at the homes of multiple top officials close to Adams. These included Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks and the home of First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, who shares her residence with Schools Chancellor David Banks. During these raids, phones belonging to both Caban and senior mayoral advisor Timothy Pearson were confiscated, further widening the investigation’s scope. Notably, Philip and David Banks’ brother, Terence Banks – a consultant – has also come under scrutiny.

The Brianna Suggs Connection

The investigation initially took a more personal turn for Adams in November, when the FBI raided the Brooklyn home of Brianna Suggs, the mayor’s chief campaign fundraiser and a key figure in his political rise. Adams was in Washington at the time, ready to meet with the Biden-Harris administration over New York’s migrant crisis, when news of the raid broke. He immediately canceled his trip and returned to the city. Adams’ team has remained tight-lipped about whether the raid was the driving force behind his sudden return, but it certainly raised eyebrows.

Shortly after this incident, another significant development unfolded. FBI agents approached Adams on the street just 48 hours after the Suggs raid. In a dramatic move, they confiscated two of his phones and an iPad, even asking his security detail to stand aside while they executed the search.

Allegations of Foreign Influence and the Turkish Connection

At the heart of the federal probe are questions about foreign influence in Adams’ campaign – specifically, whether illegal donations from Turkish officials helped fuel his 2021 run for mayor. Investigators are delving into whether Adams, who was Brooklyn Borough President at the time, fast-tracked permits for the Turkevi Center, a Turkish diplomatic building near the United Nations. The FDNY had raised safety concerns about the project, but Adams reportedly pushed it forward regardless.

Communications between Adams and former Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro are now under scrutiny as federal authorities examine whether Adams used his influence to greenlight the building despite objections. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan himself inaugurated the Turkevi Center in September 2021.

What’s Next?

The investigation continues to focus on possible campaign finance violations, especially surrounding foreign contributions funneled through so-called “straw donors.” For now, the exact charges against Adams are sealed, leaving much of the speculation unanswered. As the mayor’s office remains in damage-control mode, it’s clear that this probe has the potential to reshape the city’s political landscape – and Adams’ future in public office.

While Adams continues to assert his innocence, this corruption investigation has put the spotlight on a complex web of connections, from his inner circle to international players. With multiple high-profile resignations and raids, the investigation is far from over.
