Former New York City mayor and 2020 White House hopeful Bill de Blasio (D) told The New York Times he’s separating from his wife, though the couple are not planning to divorce.
De Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, will date other people while they continue to share their townhouse in the exclusive Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope.

Married for 29 years, the couple says they do not plan to get a formal divorce, but they will start seeing other people even while still living together. De Blasio and McCray made the peculiar announcement in an extensive dual interview with the New York Times on Wednesday.
“I just want to have fun,” McCray told the Times.

De Blasio went on to acknowledge that McCray had been calling herself a lesbian when they first met. He said that reality always caused him to harbor doubts about their relationship.
“For the guy who took the chance on a woman who was an out lesbian and wrote an article called ‘I Am a Lesbian’ … there was a part of me that would at times say, ‘Hmmm, is this like a time bomb ticking? Is this something that you’re going to regret later on?’” he told the Times.
The onetime chief executive of the country’s biggest city blamed the stress of the job on his marriage’s deterioration. An unabashed liberal, de Blasio received mixed ratings during his tenure. Many noted his frosty relationship with law enforcement and occasional failure to manage everyday municipal affairs.
De Blasio represented New York City as mayor from 2014-2021. Ineligible to run for a third term, he mounted a long-shot bid in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries. In May 2022, de Blasio announced a campaign to run for Congress in New York’s redrawn 10th Congressional District. The former mayor dropped out of the race on July 19, claiming he was done with “electoral politics.”

So sad when a relationship falls ill. Even sadder is when you don’t try to nurse it back to health, but rather you simply call it something else and pretend it’s OK. It’s NOT OK.
