A state prosecutor has been assigned to investigate whether Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones (R) violated criminal law in his alleged role to help former President Donald Trump overturn his election loss in the Peach State.

Pete Skandalakis, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia, tasked himself with the probe 21 months after the Fulton County district attorney’s office was disqualified from Jones’s case.
The office was disqualified because Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) headlined a fundraiser for a Democratic candidate who went on to face Jones in his race for lieutenant governor. The judge overseeing the matter described Willis’s decision to partake as a “what are you thinking?” moment.
In a brief statement Thursday announcing his appointment, Skandalakis’s office said “no further comments will be made at this time.”
Jones was one of 16 undesignated pro-Trump electors who signed an unofficial election certificate in an attempt to supersede the vote by Georgia’s electors.
An Atlanta-area judge prohibited Willis from pursuing a case against Jones, whom she labeled a “target” after hosting a political fundraiser for his liberal opponent.
Skandalakis, the director of the bipartisan Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, took two years to appoint himself to investigate whether a criminal case against Jones should proceed. Initially, he was assigned the task of finding a replacement for Willis to investigate Jones.
Jones expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the investigation and stated that he looks forward to putting “this charade” behind him.
“Fani Willis has made a mockery of this legal process, as she tends to do. I look forward to a quick resolution and moving forward with the business of the state of Georgia,” he added.
