The Democratic Party is currently grappling with what could shape up to be one of the most calamitous three weeks in its history and one of the most tumultuous moments in American politics overall.
Following the June 27 debate between Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, where the president’s evident mental decline was apparent, rumors are swirling that Biden may finally succumb to pressure from his party and withdraw from the presidential election in November, possibly as soon as this weekend.
Sources tell political analyst Mark Halperin, “A speech has been drafted for him. He will continue on as president, is his intention.” Halperin also said that instead of endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden intends to leave the decision of his replacement to an open Democratic National Convention.
However, there are still reasons to believe that Biden does not, in fact, intend to exit the race. As of Friday, his campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, insisted that the 81-year-old is still committed to running for a second term.
And even more compelling evidence that Biden may not be dropping out after all is that the Democratic Party doesn’t appear to have anyone more popular to replace him.
Last week, an NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll revealed that Biden’s Vice President Kamala Harris finds herself in a dead heat with Donald Trump. However, other polls indicate that she is lagging behind the former president.
Additionally, the poll revealed that among the Democrats rumored as potential successors to Biden – including top choices like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer – none performed better against Trump than Biden.
A recent poll conducted by Reuters identified a potential candidate who outperforms Trump significantly: Michelle Obama.
However, it is essential to note that the former first lady has no interest in pursuing public office. While Democrats are enthusiastic about her, her candidacy remains a fantasy for a party in disarray.
It remains uncertain whether replacing Biden as a candidate would pose any actual threat to Donald Trump in November or plunge the Democratic Party into further chaos, as the data shows there is no readily apparent preferable alternative to the sitting president.
All speculation and breathless reporting aside, one thing is clear: the Biden campaign is in deep trouble, and the clock is ticking.
