Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly considering stepping down, according to CTV News. Reports indicate that he is preparing to address Parliament soon, possibly as early as this afternoon, sparking speculation about his political future.

The development comes on the heels of a significant shake-up within his government. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland abruptly resigned earlier on Monday following a behind-the-scenes disagreement with Trudeau over how to address tariff threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Freeland, seen as one of Trudeau’s closest allies, was a central figure in his cabinet, and her departure has fueled concerns about internal divisions in the Liberal Party.

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has intensified his criticism of Trudeau, declaring that Canada has “gotten out of control” under his leadership. Poilievre has capitalized on the latest controversies from the left-wing government to highlight what he perceives as a lack of direction and accountability.

CTV provides more detail on Poilievre’s latest remarks, portraying Canada as a country burdened by illegal immigration and drug-related violence:

“All this chaos and division, all these weaknesses are emerging,” while a potential tariff war is emerging with the United States, he said.

“Everything has gotten out of control,” he said, making an appeal to the “patriotic” Liberal voters across the country to abandon their support for their party.

“You are good and decent patriotic people who have been let down,” he said, before ostensibly asking for their vote.

Poilievre stated that it is time for an election to remove Canada’s recently implemented carbon pricing system on fossil fuels, which has led to significant increases in winter home heating bills and higher gas prices.

All provinces and territories are subject to this federal tax, even though Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta opted out of previous provincial carbon tax systems, and Saskatchewan had never had a carbon tax system in place.
