Former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently leading the pack in the potential 2028 Democratic presidential primary, according to a recent Morning Consult survey. Despite losing the 2024 election to President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, Harris holds 36% support among Democratic and Democratic-leaning independent voters.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg follows with 10% support, sparking speculation about his presidential ambitions after declining a Michigan Senate bid. Other potential candidates, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, each secured 5% support, with Walz signaling he may consider a 2028 run. Walz has emphasized his willingness to serve if the country calls on him, stating, “I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Billionaire Mark Cuban and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro each received 4% support, while Sen. Cory Booker garnered 3%. Other figures, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and others, secured 2% or less.
As speculation surrounding her future grows, Harris has assured supporters she is committed to staying in the fight. Although rumors about a possible gubernatorial bid in California have surfaced, she is expected to make a decision on her next steps by the end of the summer. Harris’s leadership in the primary field highlights her ongoing influence within the Democratic Party, despite her challenging tenure as vice president.
However, Harris’s leadership position may not be as reassuring to Democrats as it initially seems. Her performance in the 2020 presidential primary was marked by a quick rise and an even quicker fall. During the first debates, Harris’s campaign stumbled after she struggled to respond to a predictable question about her record, particularly her history as a prosecutor. She appeared unprepared for the challenge, which became a defining moment in her campaign. Her failure to recover resulted in a dramatic loss of momentum, and she soon dropped out of the race.
This lack of preparation and media savvy were far from one-time issues. In the 2024 election cycle, Harris seemed to face similar problems. Harris continued to be a divisive figure, often criticized for her handling of key moments and her inability to effectively communicate with voters, even within her own party.
Her 2028 candidacy could prove to be even more troublesome for Democrats, as the party risks putting forward a candidate who struggled with both national messaging and internal unity in her previous runs.
Harris’s lead in the 2028 primary, while notable, may ultimately underscore the lack of viable options within the party and signal the need for new leadership.
The prospect of Harris running again in 2028 could pose a serious challenge for the Democratic Party, as it seems unlikely that she has addressed the core issues that caused her previous struggles. If Democrats are to have any hope of securing the White House, they may need other, more dynamic candidates to emerge.

Buttigieg would be a disaster as would pritzker, harris and newsome.Democrats continue to play identity and fringe group Politics!
A lot of Democrats and the Democratic Party are not for much of anything most Americans want their government to do and how they should behave and manage the business of government.
When Democratic groups lose on an issue or don’t agree with others they resort to vitriol and violence!
That is not a way to engender support!
Too funny! The dimwit nitwit party does NOT learn. Kammikins is just as nasty and dislikable today and even into 2028 as she was in 2024. A sure fire loser!
