Far-left London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been “informally advising” openly socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, according to a report published by the U.K. outlet The Times. The cross-Atlantic political coordination has sparked renewed scrutiny of Mamdani’s radical platform, especially as the race heads into the general election stretch.
Khan, who has warned of a global resurgence in “far-right populism” and described it as a “virus,” is said to have opened a line of communication with Mamdani after the New York assemblyman defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary last month. Sources close to the London mayor confirmed that Khan’s senior advisers have also been in direct contact with Mamdani’s campaign.
An insider at London’s City Hall told The Times that Mamdani must moderate his message in the general election or risk alienating centrist and independent voters.
“The primary race is very different from the [mayoral election]. He needs to moderate or he could lose the more centrist Democrats,” the source warned.
A Radical Platform Drawing International Attention
Mamdani, a Ugandan-born, Indian-descended, U.S. citizen since 2018, has drawn national headlines for a platform that includes calls to:

- Ban all privately owned firearms
- Transform private apartment buildings into government-run housing communes
