A new biography set for release later this month reveals that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) privately criticized former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the 2020 election. McConnell allegedly referred to Trump as “stupid,” “ill-tempered” and “a despicable human being,” according to excerpts from personal oral histories shared with author Michael Tackett.
Despite their public clashes following Trump’s first attempt at reelection, McConnell’s comments went further in private, describing Trump as a “narcissist” and expressing relief about his exit from office. McConnell reportedly noted that “it’s not just the Democrats who are counting the days” until Trump’s departure, reflecting discontent within the Republican ranks as well.
The revelations about McConnell’s comments came from a series of interviews conducted before the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, a period when Trump was actively challenging the results of the 2020 election. McConnell’s relationship with Trump soured publicly after he recognized Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election, following the Electoral College certification in December 2020.
Following the Capitol riot, McConnell issued strong condemnations of Trump’s actions, leading to a significant rift between the two GOP leaders. Their communication ceased for several years, resuming only in June 2024 when Trump, now the Republican presidential nominee, met with Senate Republicans at a Capitol Hill gathering.
The new details add a layer of context to the long-standing tension between McConnell and Trump, highlighting the depth of the Republican leader’s private frustrations during a tumultuous period in American politics.
