California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) is under fire yet again — this time for deploying emergency personnel and resources more than 3,000 miles away to Puerto Rico ahead of a tropical storm, even as tens of thousands of Californians remain displaced and devastated by ongoing wildfires in his own state.
Newsom’s announcement Thursday to send aid to Puerto Rico prompted immediate backlash across social media, with critics accusing the governor of putting political optics ahead of Californians’ urgent needs. Though California frequently experiences natural disasters like wildfires and earthquakes, it has no expertise or logistical infrastructure tailored for hurricane response — raising further questions about the motivations behind the move.
The governor defended himself by pointing to his earlier decision to “pre-deploy” resources to fire-stricken parts of California back in January. But that claim has been disputed. While Newsom did allocate some assistance for an extreme wind event in Southern California earlier this year, both state and local authorities were notably unprepared in certain critical areas — including the Pacific Palisades, where state land went up in flames again just days after a fire was left largely unmonitored.
This latest controversy fits a growing pattern. Newsom has repeatedly come under scrutiny for abandoning or neglecting in-state emergencies while pursuing out-of-state political interests — sometimes even taking personal trips during crises.
Critics Say Puerto Rico Aid Is Politically Calculated
Newsom’s decision to prioritize Puerto Rico — a U.S. territory that plays a strategic role in presidential nominations — is also being seen by many as a political calculation. While Puerto Rico itself does not cast electoral votes in presidential elections, it holds a Democratic primary and has symbolic and narrative significance in national politics. Additionally, Puerto Rican voters in swing states like Florida and Pennsylvania are likely to play key roles in 2028 — when Newsom is widely expected to launch a campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
That context has only fueled speculation that Newsom’s Puerto Rico deployment is more about building national goodwill and less about fulfilling his duties as California’s governor.
“Californians are still without homes, and Gavin Newsom is already thinking about the Iowa caucuses and Florida primaries,” one social media user wrote. “The governor’s priorities are clear — and they don’t include California.”
His presidential ambitions remain an open secret, with recent visits to South Carolina and other early-primary states hinting at a looming 2028 bid.
For now, Californians continue to deal with the fallout of raging wildfires, power outages, and evacuation orders — while their governor garners headlines for helping storm-prone islands far beyond the state line.
Newsom’s decision to prioritize Puerto Rico over his own wildfire-ravaged state fits a well-documented pattern.
A History of Absences
In March 2023, during a blizzard emergency that left thousands stranded in California’s mountain communities, Newsom left the state for a personal trip to Mexico. He only declared a state of emergency after the storm had already passed and public criticism mounted. Residents were stuck for days without basic necessities like food, fuel, and medicine. National Guard units, ordered in late, failed to reach key areas in time.
He took heat in 2022 for vacationing in Montana, despite the state being on California’s list of banned travel destinations for its socially conservative policies. Newsom not only defied the state’s travel guidelines but also used state-funded security during the trip.
Then there was Thanksgiving 2021, when Newsom vacationed in Cabo San Lucas at a luxury villa linked to a Russian oligarch convicted of tax fraud — all while California remained under a COVID-19 state of emergency that he himself extended.
Perhaps most infamous was the 2020 French Laundry dinner, where Newsom was caught dining maskless with lobbyists at an exclusive Napa Valley restaurant, after publicly instructing Californians not to dine out during the pandemic. That moment, emblematic of double standards and elite privilege, sparked widespread outrage and led to a recall effort the following year.

What a piece of dirt!
With everything that man has done to his state, I’m wondering why do they keep voting for him. Why didn’t they vote I believe twice on recalling him?
He is destroying their state, takes trips while his state has on crisis after another. That man should never be governor for certainly not President.
That man only cares about his own wallet and power not the people of California. The voters need to wake up.
Lie-beral Demonocrats are NOT qualified to run our country, but they DO KNOW how to run it into the ground. Gruesome Newscum is just playing, self righteous. He’s a ‘good guy’. (Look-At-Me-See-How-Nice-I-Am).
