Pelosi Reveals Future Plans

-

After much speculation, outgoing House Speaker has announced her future plans.

Pelosi's announcement follows Republicans gaining a majority in the House of Representatives and entreaties from leaders, from President on down, to stay on as the leader of .

In a speech crafted by presidential historian Jon Meacham, Pelosi said that she will pass the power and responsibility of leadership on to other Democrats. She will remain in as a backbencher to advise the next generation of leaders.

The consensus was that Pelosi, 82, would retire from Congress if she lost the coveted speaker's gavel.

Biden recently called the speaker's office, where he reiterated Pelosi's importance as the chamber's top Democrat.

“I know it's family first, but I hope you stick,” Biden told her.

Sources familiar with her plans told the press over the summer that, at the time, the Democrat wanted Biden to appoint her the next U.S. ambassador to Italy if Republicans won the House.

As American Liberty News reported:

If Pelosi is appointed to the cushy position, the ambassador's villa in Rome, Villa Taverna, has impressive gardens, a pool and a three-story wine cellar.

However, the 82-year-old has kept quiet about her plans for the future. Many Republicans and some Democrat colleagues have pushed Pelosi to retire from .

In January, Democrat House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth, D-Ky., predicted Pelosi would retire from Congress at the end of this term.

“My gut would tell me that this would be her last term.” Rep. Yarmuth said. “I see a lot of people who would be the presumed successors donating a lot of money to their colleagues.”

Pelosi's leadership team includes Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Democratic Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C. All three are in their eighties. The triumvirate has dominated the House Democratic caucus for decades.

Both Hoyer and Clyburn are contemplating their futures as well.
