A Planned Parenthood chapter in Florida is under scrutiny after a complaint was filed with the IRS by the pro-life organization 40 Days for Life. The complaint states the nonprofit violated its tax-exempt status by providing workspace for the Harris-Walz presidential campaign, a violation that, if held up, should have serious consequences for its nonprofit status.
40 Days for Life asserts that Planned Parenthood Florida has engaged in political activity by overtly supporting the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. According to the complaint, Planned Parenthood allowed campaign staff to use its Sarasota office to promote political events for one ticket, including distributing flyers for “Tim Walz Tuesdays,” an initiative tied to the campaign.
Shawn Carney, CEO of 40 Days for Life, explained to Fox News Digital that his group routinely conducts peaceful vigils outside abortion facilities nationwide, including at over 1,700 locations where Planned Parenthood operates. Carney asserts that their continued presence at these facilities often bring to light violations of nonprofit rules, such as the improper use of Planned Parenthood facilities for political purposes.
“We see a lot of things that Planned Parenthood does,” Carney said. “This is one of many violations we’ve seen, and they’re clear, documented violations of the law.”
Under U.S. tax law, 501(c)(3) organizations like Planned Parenthood are prohibited from participating in political campaigns or endorsing political candidates. The IRS requires that such organizations remain neutral in political activities to preserve their tax-exempt status. The rules are intended to prevent nonprofits from using their public funding and tax advantages to influence elections or engage in partisan politics.
“This was clearly noticeable. They were giving out flyers promoting Tim Walz, hosting Walz campaign events, and providing space to do that, which they didn’t do for Republicans,” Carney argued. “As a 501(c)(3), this is basic—you’re not allowed to engage in that kind of activity. It’s clear and straightforward.”
As of now, Planned Parenthood Florida has not responded to the specific allegations raised by 40 Days for Life. Fox News Digital reached out to the organization multiple times for comment, but no response was received by the publication deadline. This lack of comment has fueled further questions about Planned Parenthood’s political involvement.
Losing its tax-exempt status would not only be a financial blow but could also damage the organization’s credibility and its ability to advocate for reproductive rights in the U.S. On the other hand, if the complaint is dismissed, it could set a precedent for the continued blending of activism and political engagement by nonprofit organizations without facing legal repercussions — as well as raise serious concerns about equal application of the law, as conservative organizations have had their tax-exempt status threatened for much less.
