Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has called for criminal prosecution of Biden administration officials involved in the sale of border wall materials, following an exclusive report by The Daily Wire that revealed the materials are being auctioned off before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Cruz’s remarks came after the report detailed the sale of these materials, which had not been put to use as the Biden administration halted border wall construction immediately after assuming office.
“This is one of the most offensive things I’ve ever seen,” Cruz said. “Let me give you an analogy: Let’s say you’re a sheriff, you’re an elected sheriff, and you get beat. You get beaten. So there’s a new sheriff coming into office, and let’s say you have 10 squad cars that are $50,000 a piece, and on your last week in office, you decide, I’m going to sell all the squad cars for 100 bucks each, because I hate the sheriff that beat me, and I want to make sure the new sheriff has no squad cars.”
According to the report, large quantities of border wall materials are being transported by the contractor DP Trucking LLC. These materials, which include steel bollard wall sections, are being moved from border locations near Nogales, Tucson, and Three Points, Arizona, to a location in Marana, Arizona, where they are being auctioned through GovPlanet, a surplus government equipment marketplace. The website for GovPlanet lists auctions for steel bollard wall sections, with some bidding starting at as little as $5 per section, a price far below their actual value. These low starting prices have raised concerns about the potential for fraud or corruption, with some suggesting that the materials are being undervalued and sold off for personal gain.
The materials include steel wall panels, concrete barriers, and other construction components. Videos obtained by The Daily Wire show large stacks of these unused sections being transported on flatbed trucks, heading north from the border. Border patrol agents have reported that up to half a mile of unused wall sections is being removed each day, with the goal of clearing the area before Christmas.
Cruz has strongly criticized the administration’s actions, suggesting that the sale of these materials is a direct attempt to undermine any future efforts to continue the border wall’s construction, a project championed by former President Donald Trump.
Cruz emphasized the severity of the situation, describing it as a form of theft of government property. “Let me be very clear to every official at the Department of Homeland Security or anywhere else who approves selling off incredibly expensive portions of the border wall for $5 a piece: you are engaged in theft of government property, and you should expect the Department of Justice to investigate you and prosecute you.”
Critics argue that the Biden administration’s decision to auction off the materials is not only a waste of resources but also an insult to the American taxpayers who funded the wall’s construction in the first place.
